"Wisdom for the New Year"

Preaching: Senior Pastor Ben Roberts
Worship Leader: Associate Pastor Mark Stapleton
Old Testament Reading: 1 Kings 3:4-15
Epistle: Ephesians 1:3-14
Holy Gospel: Luke 2:40-52

“Let our gladness have no end, alleluia!” (LSB 381:1). “Let our gladness banish sadness All throughout creation!” (LSB 371:1). These two songs of the Christmas season remind us that we are in glad times as we celebrate the birth of our Lord. This year, because of the way the days of the week fall immediately after Christmas Day, we are blessed by having not one but two Sundays after Christmas! Through the Holy Gospel today, we hear about our Lord Jesus when He was a young man—one who increased in wisdom and stature. Jesus was glad to be in God’s house when He was in Jerusalem. Our gladness in these special days is heightened by our being here for worship as we grow in wisdom and in stature by God’s endless grace!
An e-mail titled "Second Sunday after Christmas (with Holy Communion)" was sent to church members on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. Sunday School

Epiphany is a special day on our church calendar - it is a day of celebration, a festival we remember each year on January 6th. Epiphany celebrates the wonder of God's magnificent power as He placed a brilliant star in the sky to shine over Baby Jesus. The wise men used that star to find Jesus and gave him precious gifts as they celebrated in his presence. Each year we honor Jesus' birth on Christmas Day, and His miraculous coming is so wonderful that we continue to celebrate on Epiphany!

We'll learn more about the festival of Epiphany in our lesson because we want to know everything the Bible tells us about Jesus' coming to earth.

Lesson materials will be sent to all Sunday School and Wednesday Bible School families. If you do not receive your package, contact Dalyne Shinneman at or call 630.772.1688.

NOTE: Sunday School in-person will meet Sunday, January 3rd, in the Heritage Room. Come join us!

Help Needed!

Help is needed on Sunday Jan. 3 at noon to undecorate and take down the Christmas trees currently gracing our Sanctuary. If you are able to help please email Art Schroeder at or the church office,
Altar Flower Calendar Openings

Altar flowers may be given in memory or in honor of someone or some occasion, in thanksgiving of something or to the Glory of God. The Flower Chart for 2021 is posted in the narthex on the left brick pillar as you walk into the sanctuary. Flowers are $42 for two arrangements.
Multiple floral arrangements to beautify the altar are always welcome! If you wish to sign up for a particular Sunday and someone else has already signed up, we invite you to sign up as well – you can split the $42 cost with the person signed up or purchase an additional two arrangements for $42. A member of the Altar Guild will contact you in advance for your dedication. The flowers may be taken home after the Sunday services for you to enjoy at home or perhaps share with a loved one or someone you wish to share an invitation to worship at St. John’s.
Praise God and all His Stewards who were able to give financially to SJLG this past year. Thank you on behalf of everyone for making our 134th year fiscally healthy in very difficult times! Looking ahead to 2021, we will be presented with new and exciting opportunities to 'give' and apply our God-given gifts in Christ's mission field. January's focus will be working with The Center For Independence Through Conductive Education in Countryside. Please watch this inspiring video as we prepare to volunteer our time and talents with the Center and their amazing children and adults just around the corner!

Congregational Concerns
In response to the concern which was brought up at our congregational meeting we would like to have some additional insight into the idea that St. John's does not always seem to be supportive of the beliefs and teachings of LCMS. Additional information would be very helpful in order for church leadership to make a determination as to whether or not this is the case.
Please feel free to reach out to:
If you prefer, please feel free to mail your response to St. John's directed to the Board of Elders. The church address is 505 S Park Rd, La Grange, IL 60525. We would like for any response to be made by the end of the year so that we can address the concern in a timely manner.
Thanks for your help to us in addressing this issue. BIBLE STUDY AND SMALL GROUPS!
