Year-End IRA Charitable Contributions
As we approach the end of the year and contemplate end-of-year philanthropic contributions, families holding IRAs may want to consider a year-end gift through your IRA.
When you make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to St. John’s Lutheran Church and
School from your IRA, the benefits are two-fold; you benefit from not having to pay income
taxes on that withdrawal, and St. John’s continues to be able to fund our missions and outreach efforts by impacting our community with God’s love and saving grace.
If you are 70.5 or older, you can give any amount (up to $100,000 annually) directly from your IRA to St. John’s Lutheran Church. If you are 72 or older, this charitable gift from your IRA can also be used to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD).
If you plan to have your gift count toward your RMD, we encourage you to start this process
early as there have been mail delays throughout the year. If you have check writing privileges for your IRA, the check must clear your account by December 31 st to be counted inside the tax year.
If you have any questions on how to set-up a donation from your IRA, please reach out to Julie Rauch in our Finance Office [email protected]
We thank you for your support and being part of the St. John’s mission.

Thank you to St. John's School families, Sunday School students and congregation who generously packed 130 boxes for our annual collection and donation to Operation Christmas Child. The first graders were instrumental in making the boxes and setting up the beautiful display in the narthex and then collected them and dropped them off at Hope Church in Countryside as part of their Eagles in Action project this year. We had a great time at the packing party on November 12th where once again we were all together to pack boxes.
These shoeboxes go to the ends of the earth to children in some of the hardest-to-reach places—whether deep jungles, city slums, steep mountainsides, or one of 1,000 remote Pacific islands. Many of these areas are resistant to the Gospel, for cultural or religious reasons, and are home to numerous unreached people groups, some of whom have never heard the Name of Jesus Christ. We are helping to spread the Gospel all over the world. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations." Matthew 28:19

Letters of Hope for the Dakota Boys and Girls
Let’s continue to support the children at Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, a Christ-centered residential treatment and educational center for children and their families. For residents, hope can mean the difference between successful treatment and giving up on life. Many of the residents have almost no one who believes in them. They are placed at the Ranch because they have no place to call home and no one who encourages them toward a happy and successful life. We can be a source of inspiration and encouragement to these residents. Please join us at the LWML meeting to write cards of encouragement and hope. Tuesday Nov 28th at 7pm in the narthex. We will have all the supplies needed. Everyone is welcome.

POINSETTIA ORDERS
It is a long tradition at St. John’s for the congregation to place poinsettias on the Altar at Christmas in celebration of Jesus’ birth. Although poinsettias thrive in tropical regions, their brilliant red flowers and green leaves make them popular for Christmas. The poinsettias may be planted outdoors in the warm season of Chicago where they may grow into a bush several feet tall. A member of the Altar Guild will be in the narthex after each Sunday service on December 3 and 10, to take orders for poinsettias to be placed on the Altar for the Christmas services. Plants are $16.00 each and may be taken home after the Christmas Day service.
