"Afterward" (Matthew 21:28-32)

We are all professional procrastinators when it comes to God. We treat His commands like a software update on our phones, clicking "remind me tomorrow" while we stay comfortable on the couch. This week, Pastor explores Jesus’ Parable of the Two Sons and forces us to drop our polite "church masks." Join us as we look at the word "Afterward"—the exact moment where the Holy Spirit crashes into our stalling tactics, drags us out of our ruts, and frees us for radical obedience in the vineyard. Your "afterward" is now!

PLEASE WELCOME OUR GUEST

On Sunday, September 27, we will welcome Mr. Wayne Oliver, Senior Gift Officer for Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, who will speak at both worship services and at Bible Class. He will report on the state of the seminary and on St. John’s continued commitment to the James Paul Haberkost Student Aid Endowment (a tribute to Pastor Haberkost’s 22 years of ministry and service at St. John’s).

The endowment is one of five ministries that our congregation supports with its mission contributions. This fund provides much-needed tuition support for the seminarians at Concordia.

Dr. Thomas Egger, president, recently wrote: “We are truly blessed, especially for 100 years of God’s Word shaping God’s servants on our beautiful Clayton, MO campus.”

St. John’s congregation is continuing to aid future pastors to serve the Lord’s church in America and abroad. Your contributions to missions make this monetary support possible.

    Thanks be to God!

The Women's Monday Night Zoom Bible Study resumes on Monday, October 5 at 7:00 pm. We are studying Women of the Bible by Ann Spangler & Jean E. Syswerda. This study focuses on fifty-two remarkable women in Scripture--women whose struggles to live with faith and courage are not unlike your own. Vital and deeply human, the women in this book encourage you through their failures as well as their successes. You'll see how God acted in surprising and wonderful ways to draw them--and you--to Himself. This devotional offers a fresh perspective that will nourish and strengthen your personal relationship with Jesus. If you would like to be a part of this study group, contact Rebecca - Schiltz4@sbcglobal.net or Sherrie - s.smith.lwml@gmail.com. Everyone is welcome!

This weekend our church will kick off the Diaper Derby for families served by Caring Network. As a church, we will be collecting diapers, especially sizes 4, 5, & 6. Please bring in supplies by October 25th and leave them in Narthex near the Food Pantry collection baskets. Supplies benefit Caring Network’s baby bank programs, providing material goods, parenting classes, and spiritual support to new parents in need.

If you are a Thrivent client, you can direct your Choice Dollars by Dec. 31 to St. John’s Church or School. Your support helps strengthen our mission. To learn more or direct your 'Choice Dollars' go to thrivent.com/thriventchoice or call 800-847-4836 and say “Thrivent Choice.” Thank you!

Do you enjoy fresh flowers?

Each week the altar is beautified with fresh flowers given by individuals of St. John’s congregation. Flowers may be given in memory or in honor of someone or some occasion, in thanksgiving of something, or to the glory of God. The flowers may be taken home after the Sunday services for you to enjoy at home or perhaps share with a loved one or someone you wish to share an invitation to worship at St. John’s. The Flower Chart for 2026 is posted in the narthex on the left brick pillar as you walk into the sanctuary. Flowers are $65 for two arrangements. If you wish to sign up for a particular Sunday and someone else has already signed up, we invite you to sign up in addition to another person giving flowers—you can split the $65 cost with the person signed up or purchase an additional two arrangements for $65. Multiple floral arrangements to beautify the altar are always welcome! A member of the Altar Guild will contact you in advance for your dedication.

Both kindergarten and preschool enjoyed a walking trip to the park this Friday for a fun snack picnic! What a wonderful way to enjoy the beautiful weather and wrap up the week together.

On Monday, preschool kicked off two weeks of dinosaur fun. This week, the children are learning about the letter M and exploring the color of the week, purple. They've been busy painting their very own purple dinosaurs and will even get the chance to do some dinosaur excavating! It's going to be a dino-mite two weeks of learning, exploring, and having fun!
