Sacristans Assistance Needed - Update

If you are interested in serving as a sacristan on either Saturday or Sunday, we would love for you to join us! The work is not difficult and one of the current sacristans would train you. Plus, there are always people at Mass who are willing to assist in putting things away.

Peace has offered to facilitate the movement of furniture on Saturdays, so the "heavy lifting" for that date has been significantly reduced. If that was holding you back from volunteering in this ministry, then it is no longer an issue!

Please contact Mallory Rusch at  if you would like to serve as a sacristan on either day. Your assistance would be sincerely appreciated.
Celebrate Jenn's Graduation
May 18, 2019
1:00 - 5:00 pm

Jenn Reyes Lay is graduating from Eden Theological Seminary on May 17 with her Master's in Divinity. I (Jenn) am grateful for all the love and support from my Sts. Clare & Francis church family over these past three years and would love to have you celebrate this accomplishment with me at my graduation party on Saturday, May 18 from 1:00 - 5:00pm at my house: 1427 S Ewing Avenue, St Louis, MO 63104 . Street parking is available on Park Avenue and Ewing Avenue. We will have an outdoor picnic on the lawn next to my house with food, drinks, lawn games, and even live music from one of Roger's bands! We will be providing some food from the grill and cake and invite those who are able to bring a side dish to share. We will have tents and tables set up but if you have a lawn chair you can bring that would help too! Hope to see you there!

Hear the homily by Suzanne Schloemann from May 11:

Video of past homilies can be found on the parish Facebook page, here.

Audio recordings of some older homilies can be found here .

(Excerpted from a conversation between Krista Tippett and Brené Brown on the “On Being” podcast)

MS. TIPPETT: [In your book, you say,] “One of my worst defenses when I get anxious or fearful in conflict is to put people on the stand. I break into vicious lawyer mode and depose people rather than listening. It’s terrible. It always ends badly, but it’s how I get to being right.”

And there was another one … where you talked about how you realized that when you were sitting with somebody, having these hard encounters, you were just thinking ahead to what you were gonna say next. And then, when people do that to you, you hate it. So talk about some of the really practical things you know about how to ratchet that back and ... be the people we want to be, in those moments.

MS. BROWN: Yeah, I think you’re talking about an interview that I did with Michelle Buck, who teaches at Kellogg, the school of business at Northwestern. And she teaches — I love the name of this. It’s not “conflict resolution.” It’s “conflict transformation,” which I think is great. …The biggest takeaway for me… is we’ve got to stop walking through the world looking for confirmation that we do not belong, because we will always find it. It’s the confirmation bias. If you are looking for confirmation you don’t belong, you’re gonna find it. We don’t negotiate our belonging externally. It’s not something that we negotiate with other people or groups of people.

MS. TIPPETT: It’s not something somebody else can give you.

MS. BROWN: Yeah, no one can give us this. We carry this in our heart. And so the most tangible behaviors that I have found: Stay curious, be kind, and, as Harriet Lerner has taught me, listen with the exact same amount of passion that you want to be heard.

Prayer List
The Sts. Clare & Francis Prayer list is available for you to share prayer requests from you to your sisters and brothers who are walking this faith journey with you. Praying for one another when there are specific needs is one of the greatest ministries we can provide to one another. But, we cannot pray for events and happenings that we do not know about. Please share your prayers requests with the community. You can be as specific or general as you would like. Contact Jim Schratz with all prayer requests.
Caring Ministry
The Caring Ministry at Sts. Clare & Francis brings the loving presence of God, through a caring companion on the journey, when life is difficult. When we find ourselves struggling with illness, grief, depression, relationships, stress, the Caring Ministry is a supportive and listening presence - not counseling or problem solving. Don't go it alone; contact Sue Self or one of our priests to find out more, and see if it's a fit for you. We want to care for you.
