A Message From Church Council

Dear Members,

Emmanuel has long been known as a welcoming congregation, and many of us can recall the warm greeting we received on our first Sunday here. That spirit of hospitality is central to who we are, and we remain committed to it.

This past Sunday, during worship, an individual entered the sanctuary, walked down the center aisle, and approached the altar before leaving the building. While the situation ended peacefully and no one was harmed, we took it seriously and reported it this week to the Venice Police Department (VPD).

To ensure the safety of everyone who worships here, we are putting new measures in place beginning this weekend. VPD has recommended that all exterior doors be locked once worship begins. Please know that these doors will always remain unlocked for exiting at any time and for emergencies. If you arrive after the service has started, you will be able to enter only through the Tamiami Trail entrance. Clear signage will be posted at each door to guide you.

The Church Council is forming a Security Task Force to review and strengthen our current procedures. If you have experience in security, facility management, or related fields, we would be grateful for your help. Please contact the church office if you are willing to serve. Please note that the procedures we are putting in place for this weekend may change based on the assessments of VPD and the Security Task Force.

We know these changes may feel different at first, but they are an important step in caring for one another as we gather to worship God together. Thank you for your understanding and for helping us keep Emmanuel a congregation where everyone can worship freely, joyfully, and safely.

Yours in Christ,

KC Farrell, Council President

Missed Last Week's Sermon?

July 27, 2025, Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

Unfortunately, the internet in the Sanctuary went down during worship last week, so we weren’t able to record the service. We’ve been working closely with our technical support company and Comcast to get everything back up and running, and we’re hopeful that livestreaming will be restored this weekend. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this!

“Are you chasing wind… or living rich toward God?”

“Vanity of vanities,” says the Teacher, “all is vanity and a chasing after wind.” (Ecclesiastes 1:2)

This week’s readings remind us that so much of what we work for and cling to cannot last. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of a rich man who builds bigger barns to store his wealth, believing he’s secured his future. But God calls him a fool because his life ends that very night.

It’s easy to shake our heads at the “rich fool,” but the truth is this parable is for all of us. We live in a culture that says more is always better — more money, more comfort, more control. Yet, as Ecclesiastes says, that’s “chasing after wind.”

Paul reminds us in Colossians: “You have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” In baptism, we’ve already died to that way of living. Our treasure is secure in Christ, so we are free to be “rich toward God” — living generously, gratefully, and open-handedly.

What “wind” are you chasing? How is God calling you to live differently this week?

Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

This week’s lectionary readings invite us to think honestly about what we treasure.

We all spend our days building something—careers, homes, savings, legacies. But Jesus reminds us in Luke’s Gospel that there’s a difference between being rich in things and being rich toward God.

Ecclesiastes names the struggle many of us feel: that even good, hard work can feel empty without deeper purpose.

Colossians offers hope by reminding us our true life is hidden with Christ.

And Jesus tells a parable that asks us to consider where our treasure really lies.

Join us for a short video reflection exploring what it means to hold our possessions lightly, to seek what lasts, and to center our lives on God.

Whether you feel overwhelmed by clutter or caught up in striving—this week is an invitation to let go and look up.

Because where your treasure is… there your heart will be also.
