"Sent with the Seventy"

Dear Beloved in Christ,

This week, as we prepare to celebrate Independence Day on Friday, we are invited by our gospel reading to reflect not only on the freedoms we cherish as citizens, but on the calling we share as followers of Jesus.

In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus sends out seventy of his followers—ordinary believers, not just the original twelve apostles—to go ahead of him in pairs. He trusts them with an incredible task: to bring healing, to proclaim that “the kingdom of God has come near,” and to live as people sent by grace. Seventy disciples, thirty-five pairs, going out not with power or status, but with the authority of Christ’s compassion.

It’s striking, especially in a week filled with flags and fireworks, to remember that true freedom is not just the freedom to do what we want, but the freedom to live with purpose and love. The gospel gives us that kind of freedom—the kind that calls us out of ourselves and sends us into the world for the sake of others. Not just pastors or professionals, but all of us. If you have been touched by the grace of Christ, you, too, are sent.

What does this look like in everyday life? The mission Jesus gives is clear: offer healing, proclaim hope, and live like the kingdom of God is near. That might mean visiting someone who is lonely. It might mean sharing food with someone who’s struggling. It might mean listening without judgment or standing up for someone who’s been silenced. It always means living with hearts open to where Jesus is sending you next.

And here’s the most beautiful part: we never go alone. Just as Jesus sent the seventy out in pairs, we are sent in community. We gather in worship to be reminded that Christ first came near to us. In the waters of baptism, in the bread and cup of communion, in the comfort of prayer and fellowship, we are filled again with God’s Spirit—and then we are sent.

So as you enjoy your barbecues, parades, and time with family this Independence Day, I invite you to also remember the freedom we have in Christ. You are not just set free from something. You are set free for something. You are sent—with grace, with purpose, and with the promise that God has come near.

Happy Independence Day,

Pastor Will

Lutheranism and the Founding of the United States:

A Hidden Legacy

When we think of the founding of America, names like Washington and Jefferson come to mind. But beneath the surface of the familiar story lies a lesser-known influence: Lutheranism. In this special Independence Day episode, we explore how Lutheran theology, immigrant communities, and key figures like Henry Melchior Muhlenberg and his sons helped shape American ideals. From Martin Luther’s doctrine of the “two kingdoms” to the commitment to education, freedom of conscience, and the idea of vocation, Lutheran contributions quietly but profoundly influenced the foundations of American democracy.

There is a need for new leaders (aka facilitators) for our Grief and Grace program. July 7th at 8:30 – 11:30, there will be a training class in the church office. This is a very rewarding ministry which you only have to do (hopefully) once a year, and it reaches out to the whole community but especially our members. If this is something that you feel you would enjoy and could contribute your time and your heart to, please contact Barb Spenks at the church office for more details and information.

Grief only exists where love lived first. If you have lost a loved one and need some help coping with what comes next, we are here to help guide you through it all. A six-week Grief and Grace program will begin on July 14th in the Office Center at 10:30 – 12:00.

Contact Barb Spenks 941-488-4942 to register or for any questions you may have.

A Way to Minister to God’s Children

Day 4 Hope is a ministry led by our neighbor, Venice Presbyterian Church (VPC), specifically to help children without homes to go back to school on an equal basis with their peers. On July 26 up to 250 children and families who have been identified by teachers, counselors, and other professionals will come to this event at VPC. They receive school supplies PLUS dental screening and fluoride treatment, vision screening and haircuts, along with hygiene products, other gifts, and prayers.
