First Sunday in Lent
Dear Beloved in Christ,
As we step into the holy season of Lent, we begin with a journey into the wilderness. The First Sunday in Lent calls us to remember who we are—a people rescued, carried, and sustained by God’s grace.
The reading from Deuteronomy (26:1-11) recounts Israel’s story: once wanderers, enslaved and helpless, they were delivered by God’s mighty hand and brought into a land flowing with milk and honey. They did not earn it; they were carried. And their response? Worship. Gratitude. Open hearts and open hands, laying their first fruits before the Lord in thanksgiving.
Psalm 91 reminds us why they could trust so completely—because God is their refuge, their shelter, their strength. God is the One who lifts us up, who holds us fast, who provides even the very breath we use to sing God's praise.
Paul echoes this promise in Romans 10: “The Word is near you, on your lips and in your heart.” That Word is Jesus—God’s “yes” to sinners, the One who speaks life, forgiveness, and hope to all who call upon His name. Salvation is not far off. It is not hidden in heaven or buried in the depths of the earth. It is as close as your own confession: Jesus is Lord.
And then, in the wilderness, we see our Lord Himself facing the voice of the tempter (Luke 4:1-13). “If you are the Son of God,” the devil whispers. “Are you sure? Did God really say?” With every test, Jesus stands firm where we would falter. He resists where we would give in. He speaks the truth when all we hear are lies. And He does it all for us.
This is the heart of Lent: that Jesus has already won the battle we could never fight alone. He holds fast to the promise so that it may be ours forever. God is your refuge. Jesus is your Good Shepherd. And God's Word? It is closer than you think. It is for you. Always for you.
As we journey through Lent, may we hold fast to Christ, who has already held fast to us.
In God's Grace,
Pastor Will
