Dear Team MSCS,

This week provided opportunities to learn, collaborate, and strengthen the partnerships that support our students and schools. From engaging with educational leaders across the country to connecting with school leaders and community partners here at home, our work remains focused on creating the conditions for student success and ensuring every child has access to the opportunities they deserve.

Saturday – Sunday: Shared Learning

I participated in the Council of the Great City Schools Superintendent Cohort in Indianapolis, joining educational leaders from urban school districts across the nation. Throughout the weekend, discussions focused on leadership, organizational effectiveness, student outcomes, and innovative strategies for strengthening school systems. These opportunities to collaborate and learn from colleagues across the country help inform our work at MSCS as we continue preparing for the upcoming school year and advancing student success.

Monday: Shared Leadership

I had the opportunity to attend the Southwest and Southeast First Annual Site-Based Decision Making Council Brunch. The event highlighted the important role these councils play in strengthening collaboration among school leaders, educators, families, staff, and community partners.



I was especially grateful to see the strong engagement and commitment of our parents and families. Their voices, perspectives, and partnership are essential to the success of our schools and students. Site-Based Decision Making Councils reflect our belief that the best outcomes are achieved when educators, families, and community stakeholders work together in support of student success.

Tuesday: Strategic Planning

The day included meetings focused on district priorities, organizational planning, and preparations for the 2026-27 school year. As we continue our summer planning efforts, we remain focused on strengthening systems, supporting schools, and positioning students, staff, and families for success in the year ahead.

Wednesday: Community Connections

I had the opportunity to meet with Gary Sysak of the Frayser Connect Partnership to discuss our continued collaboration in support of students, families, and the broader Frayser community. Strong partnerships remain essential to expanding opportunities and ensuring students have the resources they need to succeed.



I also enjoyed spending time with our EMPLOY summer interns, who are gaining hands-on experience across departments throughout the District. Through this opportunity, students are learning about the inner workings of MSCS, exploring career pathways, developing professional skills, and contributing to the important work that supports our schools and students every day. It was encouraging to see their enthusiasm, curiosity, and commitment to their future success.

Thursday: Pathways to Success

Today, I had the opportunity to speak at the MLGW Utility Construction and Automotive Boot Camp Graduation Ceremony alongside district and community partners.

The program, made possible through a partnership between Memphis-Shelby County Schools, Memphis Light, Gas, and Water, and Southwest Tennessee Community College, provides students with hands-on experience, technical skills, and exposure to high-demand career pathways.

It was inspiring to celebrate these graduates and witness firsthand the impact that strong partnerships and workforce development opportunities can have on our students' futures.

Later in the day, I joined Jack Nichols, Senior Manager of Learning Acceleration with the Tennessee Department of Education, for visits to Maxine Smith STEAM Academy and Downtown Elementary School, where we highlighted the innovative work taking place to support student learning and achievement.

Friday: Honoring Legacy and Investing in Students

Tomorrow, our District will observe Juneteenth, a day to reflect on our history, celebrate progress, and recognize the enduring importance of opportunity, community, and service.



In recognition of the holiday, community members and supporters will also come together for the 2026 Memphis Golf Classic: Juneteenth on the Green. This fundraiser helps provide athletic equipment, uniforms, and supplies for students across our District, ensuring more young people have access to opportunities that support their growth and development both inside and outside the classroom.

As we honor the significance of Juneteenth, I am grateful for the many individuals and organizations who continue to invest in our students and help create brighter futures for the children we serve.
