Red Ribbon Week will conclude with our celebration of All Saints Day on October 31 and we’ll continue celebrating the following week with All Souls Day, also known as Day of the Dead.
The Day of the Dead is one of Mexico and Central America’s most extraordinary traditions rooted in ancient beliefs that have since blended and intertwined with Catholic observances. All Saints and All Souls Days are a joyful celebration of life, love, and remembrance.
Many families and communities build commemorative altars during this time to remember beloved family members and friends who have come and gone before us.
This year, for the first time, we will build an altar of the dead as a celebration of those who are no longer with us but whose presence endures. This is a reminder that the ties of love and affection that bind our lives together do not unravel with death. Our ancestors’ lives, examples, and stories continue to guide us as we grow to become people of service, wisdom, and peace.
Saint Francis of Assisi gave praise to God for the connectedness of all creation and taught us that even in death we are still united. Beginning Monday, October 27, we will celebrate this togetherness. We invite all students and faculty to bring photos of their loved ones to add to the altar in the Atrium near the Ministry Office.
