With gratitude and thankful hearts...

Three cheers for St. John's Community Health and the amazing celebration offered to our cathedral neighbors last Saturday! We are truly in awe for all the ways that Jim Mangia and his dedicated staff blessed us with gifts of the Spirit. Their gracious yes, professional staff, creative ideas, knowledge of the people we serve, and abundant offers of support were more than could have ever been asked or imagined.

We are so very proud of what St. John’s Community Health has become, growing from a volunteer-based ministry providing well-child care to the comprehensive, quality health and social service care network that is recognized among the largest and best in the nation. Our hearts are full of love and appreciation for all the ways that they care for our siblings, especially the ones who need us the most.

Special thanks to Gean, Jesus, Darryn, Elena, Morelia, Alisha, Guadalupe, Lori and Cabot. A health fair to remember this centennial year.

Visit from the Diocese of Taiwan

July 25 to August 4

A delegation from the Episcopal Diocese of Taiwan, led by Bishop Lennon Chang, will visit the Diocese of Los Angeles from July 25 to Aug. 4. The visit reciprocates a visit made by Bishop John Harvey Taylor and a delegation from the Los Angeles Diocese to the Diocese of Taiwan in September of 2024. The delegation visits several congregations in the diocese, including Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel; St. Thomas' Church, Hacienda Heights; and St. John's Cathedral; a visit to Homeboy Industries headquarters; visits to museums and cultural sites including the Chinese American Museum and The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens; and visits to the churches affected by the fires. On July 30, St. Paul's Commons will host a conversation between Bishop Chang and Bishop Taylor on the possibility of an exchange ministry between the two dioceses. All those interested in church leadership and Chinese language ministry are invited to attend. Email the Rev. Norma Guerra if you would like to attend.

As we look ahead to future ministry, three commemorative events are planned this fall at the cathedral to celebrate one-hundred years since the 1925 consecration of our landmark sanctuary. A cathedral thanksgiving service is set for 10.00 a.m. Sunday, November 23, concurrent with the Feast of Christ the King. Also planned are two ticketed fundraising events; an October 4 Art and Architecture luncheon featuring highlights of the sanctuary’s Romanesque Revival design, and a December 20 gala dinner. Reservation details and ticket pricing will be announced soon.

With its exterior facade patterned after the Church of San Pietro in Tuscania and its ceiling echoing that of San Miniato Basilica in Florence, the sanctuary was designed by local architect brothers Francis Pierpont Davis and Walter S. Davis. Interior appointments include a distinctive altar triptych; extensive mosaics, marble panels, stained glass, and the bishop’s hand-carved cathedra (official seat). The 1925 sanctuary was built to replace a wooden church that our parish, founded in 1890, had outgrown. St. John’s was named the diocese’s pro-cathedral in 2007.
