Bishop-elect Gallardo to preach this Sunday


Bishop-elect Antonio Gallardo is scheduled to preach at this Sunday's 10.00 a.m. Centennial Thanksgiving Eucharist.


Gallardo, 58, was elected on the eighth ballot by 134 votes in the clergy order and 187 votes in the lay order. The election required a two-thirds majority from both orders on the same ballot, in accordance with the constitution of the diocese.


Rector of St. Luke’s/San Lucas, Long Beach, since 2023, Gallardo was previously vicar of St. Luke’s of the Mountains, La Crescenta, and served on the clergy staff of All Saints, Pasadena. Ordained to the priesthood in 2019 in the Diocese of Los Angeles, he holds a doctorate in business and economics from Lehigh University, as well as degrees from Venezuela’s Universidad Experimental Politécnica (UNEXPO) and Universidad Centro Occidental Lisandro Alvarado (UCLA), Claremont School of Theology, and Bloy House Episcopal Theological School.

Food Pantry Distribution

Saturday, November 15

8.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.


Food Pantry distribution is scheduled for this Saturday. The November distribution will be especially busy with the lead up to the Thanksgiving holiday. So many have been exceptionally generous; the cuts to government aid have deeply affected the neighbors served by the cathedral. There are lots to thank including the adult and youth volunteers from St. Cross, Hermosa Beach who, along with their Rector the Rev. Dr. Rachel Anne Nyback, raised over $2,500 to support this year's turkey distribution. A contingent from St. Cross will be on-hand to help in the morning. The gates will open at 8.30 a.m. and volunteers will continue serving as supplies last.

Benefit Concert for Jamaica

A benefit concert with Steve Higgins Productions under the patronage of the Consulate of Jamaica, Los Angeles will take place at St. John’s to support Jamaica’s recovery effort from hurricane Melissa. The event is co-sponsored by Christ the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Leimert Park. Bring a giving spirit (cash or check donations). Journey Through the BCP

Sundays, Nov. 16, 23 and Dec. 7, 14, 21

Attend a special six-meeting journey through the Book of Common Prayer (BCP), a cornerstone of Episcopal identity and a deep well of wisdom for worship and daily life. Especially relevant for those thinking about baptism or confirmation.


Each week, participants will gather after the 10.00 a.m. service during coffee hour to explore the history, theology, and spiritual rhythms of the Prayer Book and learn practical ways to use it as a guide for prayer, reflection, and daily devotion. Sessions will skip Thanksgiving weekend. Bring coffee, curiosity, and questions! 

Transgender Day of Remembrance Service

USC Students, faculty, staff and allies of every tradition will participate in an interfaith service of prayer reflection and solidarity. A space for grief, hope and the reaffirmation that all gender identities and expressions are beloved. The Rev. Mel Soriano will facilitate in the University Religious Center Courtyard at the university.

Great LA Walk

Saturday, November 22

9.00 a.m.


Join the Rev. Mel Soriano for a sixteen mile journey from Pershing Square to the Santa Monica coastline. Participants will travel together along historic Wilshire Boulevard, taking in neighborhoods, stories, and the vibrant spirit of the city. All are welcome to walk any portion of the route and share in the companionship and joy of the day. Please contact the Rev. Mel for details.

Advent Lessons and Carols

Prepare your heart for the season of Christmas. Come experience the ancient tradition and joyful expectation of Advent Lessons and Carols sung by the Choir of St. John's Cathedral. The service contains readings of scripture with hymns and carols that foretell the coming joy of Christ's birth in Bethlehem. An annual Los Angeles tradition.

Tribute to Bishop Taylor

Save the date and plan to attend a multicultural celebration to honor Bishop John Harvey Taylor as he prepares to retire in 2026. The diocesan Program Group on Black Ministries is partnering in the planning. More information will follow soon.

Carols from Ukraine

Ring in the holidays with Ensemble Cherubim and their director Marika Kuzma for their concert entitled Carols: of Birds, Bells, and Peace from Ukraine. They have promised a joyful, soul-stirring concert of a cappella treasures old and new. Sponsored in part by the Ukrainian Culture Center. Tickets may be purchased through Eventbrite.
