Vestry-on-call: Mr. Nazario Palma

Please consider bringing pictures of loved ones passed to church on Sunday and they will be placed on the ofrenda as we celebrate Día de Muertos.

The flowers last week were given by Ruby Sylvestre in thanksgiving for the life of her brother Robert Hardin; the acknowledgement regretfully missed publication.

Flowers and coffee hour this week have been sponsored by Josephine Reneau as she honors the birthday of her recently departed brother, George.  Consider sponsoring coffee hour one Sunday in the month of your birthday; contact the Rev. Mel Soriano and sign up on the bulletin board in the fountain courtyard.

The Día de Muertos dioramas on the ofrenda this weekend have been assembled by the children of the parish. Children’s Chapel will continue. Please contact Rev. Mel if you have any questions.

Happy Birthday to all members of the congregation who have celebrated their birthdays this month, especially the following members: Stephen Meighan, Adam Alvarado, Julie J. Johnson, Eric Parks, Marci Clare, Isabella Islas, Ethel Zelaya Lane, Arcadio Morales, Carlos Perez, Laverne Palma, Krystal Palma, and Sharlett Rene. We include those celebrating this week: Evadney Edelson, Lurelean Gaines, Valaria Lincoln, Barbara Vaccaro, and Merdith Morris.

Time Change: Fall Back

Sunday, November 2

2.00 a.m.

Don't forget to set your clocks an hour back on Saturday before retiring for the evening. Daylight saving time ends early on Sunday morning. Did you know: the practice started so that darkness falls at a later clock time in warmer months. A bill to end the practice failed once again this past Tuesday to reach consensus in the U.S. Senate.

The Episcopal News presents “Nomination Report 2025,” a PDF magazine-format publication, in English and Spanish, of statements and Q&A with the three candidates for eighth bishop of Los Angeles. Publications are available here.

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a bishop for this diocese, and those who offer themselves as candidates, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Election Day

Tuesday, November 4

Let us reflect on our commitment to the common good, provide others with the information they need to cast their ballot, and prepare to vote as a community. Let us model healthy, faith-inspired civic engagement so that we may be a constructive example for others.

Journey Through the BCP

Sundays, Nov. 9, 16, 23 and Dec. 7, 14, 21

11.30 a.m. to 12.15 p.m.

Attend a special six-meeting journey through the Book of Common Prayer (BCP), a cornerstone of Episcopal identity and a deep well of wisdom for worship and daily life. Especially relevant for those thinking about baptism or confirmation.

Each week, participants will gather after the 10.00 a.m. service during coffee hour to explore the history, theology, and spiritual rhythms of the Prayer Book and learn practical ways to use it as a guide for prayer, reflection, and daily devotion. Sessions will skip Thanksgiving weekend. Bring coffee, curiosity, and questions!

Saturday, November 15

8.30 a.m. - 10.30 a.m.

Food Pantry distribution is scheduled for the third Saturday in November as the congregation supports the community by providing fresh produce, canned and frozen goods to families in need. The gates will open at 8.30 a.m. and volunteers will continue serving until supplies last. St. John's partners with the LA Food Bank, Seeds of Hope, and folks like you to make this vital ministry possible.

Supporting partners in the Caribbean in Response to Hurricane Melissa

Episcopal Relief & Development is in close contact with their partners, including local dioceses and agencies in Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti, as they respond to widespread devastation throughout the Caribbean region from Hurricane Melissa.

“Our local partners are assessing the needs of their community as the damage and long-term effects of this disaster become clearer,” said Eric Weaver, Director of Global Disaster Response & Resilience, Episcopal Relief & Development. “We stand by, ready to support them and the communities they serve as we learn more about the extent of damages and how best to target our response.”

Please pray for the people impacted by Hurricane Melissa. Donations to the Hurricane Relief Fund will support Episcopal Relief & Development and its partners as they respond.

Please offer prayers for his continued success. Members of the congregation are invited to write a note of thanks for his time with us.
