March 17, 2024
Dear St. Giles Families,

This week marks the beginning of our final Trimester. Time is flying by! We are all anxiously awaiting our Easter break starting Thursday, March 28th. As a reminder, all students are dismissed at 11:45 a.m., and there will be no afternoon Kids Klub. All offices will be closed for Easter Vacation while we all take a well-deserved break.

Thank you to all who attended our first STEM Night last week! It was a huge success and a great time to try out interactive experiments and math games and see STEM in action! Thank you to our guests from The Field Museum, Fenwick, STEAM Academy and our parent presenters, Chris Dobecki and Brandon Wuest. We are grateful for our parent volunteers, especially Margie Clark, Meghan Gibbs, Becky Mongiat and Sarah Yaffee for all of their hard work with preparation, set up and take down and providing additional math fun for all of our K-5 attendees.
Thanks to the Knights of Columbus of Ascension and St. Edmund Parish, I am pleased to share that all teachers and parishioners have access to Formed.org. This streaming service provides videos, lessons and podcasts with Catholic content to parishes, families and individuals. Our teachers have begun using it in the classroom for lessons at all grade levels. Please check out the link below for information on accessing these resources. There are special Lent selections and beautiful videos for Holy Week.
News from the Archdiocese and ISBE
The Illinois State Board of Education recently passed a new law requiring all schools to maintain a supply of undesignated prescribed opioid antagonists, namely Narcan. Our office personnel have been trained to use Narcan should one arise. While we hope that never occurs, we must follow the state law and keep Narcan in the office, away from student access. This information has been added to our Handbook as an addendum and will be included in the 2024-25 Handbook. Please contact me directly if you have any questions regarding this new policy.

Report Cards
Report cards will be distributed this Friday to all students. Please be sure to check backpacks!

Have a wonderful week,
Meg

One Book, St. Giles

We hope you enjoyed participating in our One Book program at home!

Thank you to Miss Voss, 4th Grade, for selecting our One Book again this year with such a perfect theme. Our students learned How to be a Lion and completed their buddy project making the main of the lion out of their hands. One side has their name, the other what makes them unique, just like Leonard. The finished product will be on display in the Corrigan, Gleeson and Frawley buildings. Our Art Club even made a 3D version of Marianne the duck who traveled with our Lion during the buddy activity last week.
Lenten Food Drive

The St. Giles Ambassadors are organizing a food drive to benefit Beyond Hunger. During this season of kindness, please help us fill the pantries of those who rely on Beyond Hunger for their weekly meals. What are they asking for?

Peanut Butter
Jelly
Canned Chicken Soup
Cheerios’ cereal
Canned Mixed Vegetables
Diced Tomatoes
Tomato Paste
Bagged Rice (White or Brown)
Dry Beans (Pinto and Black)
Refried Beans
Canned Pineapples

Items will be collected in homeroom through Thursday, March 28th.
Moana, Jr.
Friday, March 22, 2024
6:30 pm in the gym

St. Giles students in grades K-8 have been working hard to bring this story to life! Join us Friday, March 22. There will be a matinee at 1:45 p.m. for the school and another show at 6:30 p.m. for family and friends. Admission is $5 at the door.

Disney’s Moana JR. is a musical adaptation of the 2016 Disney animated film, bringing the adventures of Moana and her village of Motunui to life onstage. Moana JR. features all the beloved songs from the film, written by Tony®, GRAMMY, Emmy, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina, including “How Far I’ll Go,” “Shiny,” and “You’re Welcome.”

This thrilling and heartwarming coming-of-age story follows the strong-willed Moana as she sets sail across the Pacific to save her village and discover the truth about her heritage. Moana and the legendary demigod Maui embark on an epic journey of self-discovery and camaraderie as both learn to harness the power that lies within. With empowering messages of bravery and selflessness, Moana JR. is sure to bring out the hero within each of us.

Fun Fact: I went to kindergarten at St. Giles School (before my family moved away from Oak Park)

I not only work at St. Giles School, but my husband and I are longtime parishioners at St. Giles. I have five daughters who all attended and graduated from St. Giles School. They all have wonderful memories of their time at St. Giles School and are still close to their grade school friends. My family loves to travel and we have been able to visit many interesting places in the US and around the world!
