October 1, 2023
Dear St. Giles Families,

WOW! What a wonderful past week we’ve had with all of our Lions’ hard work, 2 days of beautiful weather and HUGE success of our Lion’s Leap. All of our families truly came together and made this event one of the best we have ever had. From our littlest Lions circling the parking lot to the cheers of their families and friends…to our K-5 students running the streets and showing their Lion pride to our community…to our middle schoolers taking on the many challenges of our annual obstacle course with joy and determination…I could not be more proud of the students of St. Giles School!

WE ARE SO CLOSE TO OUR GOAL! We are inches from our goal of $90,000 with 99% of our students registered and receiving pledges and donations for Lion's Leap this year – and there's still time to make that 100%! Mybooster.com will be open through October 6th for any additional donations. Please check if your employer will match your donation; contact Michele Bibbey with any questions. And remember to keep an eye out for classroom-specific rewards that keep coming for our amazing Lions!

Because we are so close, let’s have one more fundraising challenge! Before we tally our prize winners, any Lion who earns additional pledges this week will receive an out of uniform pass for Friday, October 6th. Let’s try to get to 100% pledge participation and hit our goal to Pie the Principal! Top earning homerooms and individuals will be announced Friday, October 6th – any new donations received by October 5th will be included in the count. Let’s see what we can do this week, Lions! We will share plenty of photos in next week's newsletter.

Perhaps most importantly, I want to say thank you to everyone who made Lion's Leap possible. First, THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS! As I’ve said, this week could not have happened without our parent volunteers, who passed out prizes, served water and fruit, lined the course for safety and support and ran games and led teams through our middle school obstacle course. To every parent, grandparent and friend who made time in their week to be here for our school, I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. And I give a special shout out to the following parents who took on specific leadership roles this week:

Rob Sabatino, Development Chair
Carolyn Burke, 6-8 Obstacle Course Chair
Jen Schurer, PreK-5 Fun Run Chair
Jenny Estrella, Prize Patrol Chair
Becky Mongiat, PTO Wellness Chair
Sarah Yaffe, Marketing & Communications Chair

Finally, a quick thank you to our teachers and staff for rallying our Lions, creating challenges, communicating efforts to families and making the experience fun for their students. Thank you to Heather Kroll for her behind-the-scenes work and to Michele Bibbey for overseeing the event! I am so blessed to work with such dedicated colleagues who give of their talents every day for the students of St. Giles. As always, our successes are team efforts – and I’m so grateful to be part of this team!

Have a wonderful week.
Meg

Reminder
Student Medication
Students are not allowed to carry any medication in their backpack or keep it in their desk or coatroom. If a child is to administer medication to him/herself, a Medical Authorization form must be filled out by the referring physician and a Parent/Permission and Authorization form must be submitted by the parent/guardian to the School Office. The office staff will keep the medication in a locked cabinet until the designated time. In cases of anaphylactic shock, staff are authorized to administer an epi-pen or in other situations, a specified medication as directed by the child’s medical plan. Please get in touch with the office with any questions or if you need to submit an authorization form.

Pack the Park Update
The Soccer Pack the Park event date has been changed from Tuesday, Oct 3 to Wednesday, Oct 11. It will be at Lindberg Park, 1150 N. Marion (not Taylor Park as originally scheduled). 5th grade vs. 6th grade at 4:45 pm and 7th grade vs. 8th grade at 5:45 pm. We hope you can make it to cheer on our student-athletes!
St. Giles Band Update

St. Giles Band is working on revamping the program and moving from after school to during the school day to meet the needs of more of our Lions interested in Band. Mr. Gloppen will offer weekly lessons and group band practice during the school day. Lessons will be 30 minutes and students will be responsible for making up any work missed in their classes. The time for lessons will vary each week so that students do not miss the same class each time. Mr. Gloppen will speak to 4th-8th grade classrooms during PE classes the week of October 2nd and 10th, where he will introduce instruments and provide more information to our Lions. Costs and specific details are still being ironed out and additional information will be shared as soon as they are finalized. We anticipate the start date will be Trimester 2.
New Teacher Spotlight

Mr. David Baker, 6th Grade Homeroom & Religion, 6th-7th Grade Math
BS Electrical Engineering, Illinois Institute of Technology, BA Television, Columbia College

Favorite Book/Movie: Impossible to answer, but I love international movies (French, Iranian and Romanian especially)

Favorite Vacation Spot: Again impossible! I love seeing new countries. Georgia and Armenia are really memorable

Fun Fact: I've visited more than 30 countries and have very fond memories of each one.

I love to travel and experience new cultures, history and food. I have a passion for many types of music and have once played in a guitar ensemble with 20 other talented musicians. When not reading or catching up with friends, I am usually volunteering my time in Oak Park on an advisory commission and non-profit board.
