Music Notes
Lenten Music Changes
This Sunday is, of course, the First Sunday of Lent. There are many ways in which we mark this season liturgically - the crosses are veiled, we omit Alleluias, and the vestments are purple. The tone of the music changes, too. Some of the greatest hymns and anthems, in their often minor keys, were written for this season. In marking Lent musically, some churches, especially those in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, suppress the use of the organ almost entirely, and the hymns and service music are sung unaccompanied. Here at St. John's, we have not gone quite that far, but we have, for the past several years, ceased from playing postludes at the end of services. In adopting this practice once again this year, it is our hope to encourage a more reflective end to our liturgy, and that the impact of the organ voluntary will be all the more meaningful when it returns at the Great Vigil of Easter.

Visiting Choir
We will be joined by the choir of Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA for our services on Sunday, March 15. Included in the music for the 9:15 a.m. service will be Miserere mei, Deus of Gregorio Allegri, Sanctus & Benedictus of Franz Schubert, and our Rite I service at 11:15 a.m. will feature the work of Herbert Sumsion.

Thursdays in Lent Begin March 5
The Ash Wednesday liturgy in the Book of Common Prayer includes an invitation to observe a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word. Over five Thursdays in Lent, St John's clergy team will lead a series of prayer and study sessions focusing on responses to the invitation. Fr. Connelly will open the series on March 5, followed by Fr. Goodheart on March 12, Fr. Cannon on March 19, Fr. Reho on March 26, and Deacon Moore on April 2.  Each week, we will begin with the beautiful liturgy of the Stations of the Cross in the church at 5:00 p.m., followed by a program in the Parish Hall from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. For more information, contact Deacon Moore at 785.9400 or kmoore@stjohnstampa.org.
Lenten Quiet Day
The Contemporary Women's Bible Study (CWBS) group invites everyone at St John's to join them for a Lenten Quiet Day on Saturday, March 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the church.  Our time together will include prayer, meditation and quiet reflection on readings from Holy Scripture.  A light lunch will be provided.  If you would like to attend, contact Deacon Kathleen Moore at kmoore@stjohnstampa.org or 785.9400.
Fellowship and Events
Everyone is invited to the Invite - Welcome - Connect "Launch Brunch" after the 9:15 a.m. service on Sunday, March 1 .  Plan to attend the event to learn about this exciting new ministry led by Dallas Coffield and Rick Eckhard, what this important ministry means for St. John's and how you can participate.  Everyone is encouraged to attend.  Curious?  Come on!
Esther Society Meeting, March 2
The next gathering of the Esther Society will be Monday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Marie Borland, 113 Adalia Avenue, Davis Islands (due to space limitations at the church that day). RSVP to John Edgar at jedgar@stjohnstampa.org with your attendance and the appetizer you plan to bring. The group will choose a Bible study for future meetings, in addition to beginning the gathering with prayer and a period of fellowship and refreshments. Questions? Contact Lisa Sepulveda, Marie Borland, or Rachel Long Mattox. The group hopes you will join them!
Moms' Meet Up in March
Moms' Meet Up will get together again Thursday, March 5, at 8:45 a.m. in Discovery House. This is a little earlier in the month than their usual schedule, they are hoping to avoid everyone's spring breaks. This month's Mom's Meet-Up will focus on how we see God in the rhythms of life-watching the Nooma video Rhythm. You can check out a preview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FNHoYl8a78
Faithful Friends Group Meeting
Faithful Friends is sponsoring a special program on Sunday, March 15, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. just after the 11:15 a.m. worship service.  A light lunch will be provided, along with a talk entitled "Support Groups:  The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" which will be given by parishioner Harry Hedges. If you or someone near to you has experienced the loss of a loved one and could benefit from fellowship and good information, please come.
Don't Scroll Past This!

We want to provide support in any time of need or crisis. Please call the parish offices at 259.1570 or  click here to email us to let us know when you need us.
