Coffee with Council
Sunday, February 9th | 9 am

The 2020 Church Council is eager to talk with you! Please join us for Coffee with Council on Sunday, February 9 from 9:00-10:30 am in the Soul Cafe. This is a casual event intended to give you a chance to get to know the new church council members and to discuss issues affecting our church life. We hope you can drop in and join us. Stay tuned for additional opportunities to meet with church leaders throughout the year.
Lenten Workshop
Lent begins in the wilderness. The Spirit guides Jesus into the wilderness where he comes face to face with temptation and struggle. And in his forty days of fasting, resisting, and struggling, Jesus is shaped for ministry.

Our season of wilderness and shaping as a church family begins with our annual Lenten Workshop on Sunday, February 23rd from 12-2pm in Whitford Hall.

In our time together we will share a meal and participate in several activities aimed at preparing us and sustaining us for the journey. All ages are welcome to join in the preparations.

Stephen Minister Training
Have you gone through a “rough time”? Perhaps it was a disappointment, a loss of a career or a marriage, or maybe the loss of a loved one.
Think about how you recovered.
 - Who and what helped?
 - Did someone help you?
 - How long did it take?
Have you thought about ways you might be able to help someone else? You don’t have to have answers for someone, but you could offer a listening ear. You might consider becoming a Stephen Minister!
With the training you would receive, you could become “a wounded healer”. For someone who does not need a counselor, you could be a Stephen Minister who “walks with someone and listens”.
You would learn and practice how to care...
 - How to listen and not dictate or judge
 - How to be empathetic
 - How to pray for and with someone
 - How to let someone recover “their way”

Housing for UM Missionaries

Mary Zigbuo and her husband, retired UM missionaries from Liberia, are going to be in North Carolina from May to November 2020. They are looking for an affordable housing option in this area (ideally in or around Durham, but they are willing to entertain broadening their search). They would like to find a small apartment in someone's home with a separate entrance, a small house or perhaps a parsonage sitting empty which they might be able to rent short term.
If you know of any such possibilities, please contact SusanHarsh-Cafferty
With God’s good Grace, DMUMC ended 2019 with a $38,153.77 surplus! We were at 101.1% of our budget for Total Revenue with $810,578.89. Pledged Income was up $21,499.09 over 2018’s total and was 2.13% over 2019’s budget. Unpledged contributions were $28,357.75 over total received in 2018, but was $2,220.87 under a very aggressive 2019 budget. Unpledged Contributions is the “plug number” used to balance the budget and in 2019 required extraordinary faith that we would reach our goal.

On the expense side of the ledger, we paid all $119,739 of our Mission payments (Apportionments). We had $29,338.88 is cost savings with almost all of that coming in Staff Compensation from positions unfilled for part of the year. This makes up the bulk of our surplus.

As we enter into the 2020 budget year, we are still trailing 2019’s regular pledges and don’t anticipate having any savings from Staff Compensation to help balance the budget this year. If you have not made your 2020 Pledge, please consider making one soon.
