A Message from Gregory
Knox Jones

Dated Tuesday, June 23, 2020
How are you? Are you worn out with physical distancing, wearing a mask, and endlessly washing your hands? It is definitely tiresome. However, the next time you put on your mask or have a conversation with a friend at a distance of six feet or more, remember this: You could be saving lives.

Social Distancing Hike
Saturday, June 27, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. at Rockford Park Tower
Ready to socialize with other WPC members and friends and enjoy the outdoors, all while social distancing? The Deacons have been brainstorming ideas to help us ease back into gathering as small groups again outside of Zooming. Coming up first is a Deacon-sponsored hike in beautiful Rockford Park. We'll meet at the tower and take off through the park from there. This event is limited to 10 people. Please be sure that everyone in your family who is required to wear a mask brings one to wear. If you'd like to participate, please email Debbie Wise at [email protected].
Compassion Camp LIVE on Zoom
Sundays, June 28, July 12, July 19, July 26 and August 2, 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
We are using Illustrated Ministry's COMPASSION CAMP online VBS curriculum for five weeks of Sunday School fun, live on Zoom! There will be music, movement, Bible stories, games, crafts, and friends! Compassion Camp is designed for kids ages 4-11, and younger kids are welcome at parents' discretion. For security reasons, there will be a unique link every week emailed in our Christian education email blast on Thursdays. Email Chesna ( [email protected]) to be added to the list. Please note NO CLASS July 5.
Emmanuel Dining Room Still Needs You
Because Emmanuel Dining Room (EDR) has small dining rooms, they are hesitant to open up too soon for their guests. The administration of EDR is developing a plan to open, and they will notify us as soon as that happens. Meanwhile, they need and appreciate all that Westminster has contributed since March. They hope that we will continue to donate sandwiches, clementines, bananas, brownies, cookies, and water until they can serve their guests inside. We will see you in Westminster's parking lot on Sunday mornings from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.!
New Programs from Our Peace & Justice Work Group Begin July 2!
Thursdays at 7:00 p.m.
Westminster's Peace & Justice Work Group is excited to launch an ongoing program of education events on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. While the effects of the coronavirus pandemic continue, these classes/discussions will take place online. We will also record these programs and make them available as YouTube videos for viewing at your convenience. Look for class topics and information in the Weekly Word and on the WPC Facebook page. Plan to join us - starting next Thursday!
Working in the Community
Thursday, July 2, 7:00 p.m. on Zoom ( https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84768977211)
Shara Smith, Executive Director of Pacem in Terris Delaware, will present our Peace & Justice Work Group's inaugural Thursday evening program on July 2 at 7:00 p.m.! Shara has been on the front lines of the movements for peace and reconciliation, ending racism, restorative justice, and non-violent conflict resolution. Her class will highlight 2020 initiatives involving small community conversation groups on racism and youth programs dealing with anti-violence and how to gain respect. She says "Don't tell people how to feel, dialogue with them." Mike Gnade will facilitate the discussion following Shara's presentation. Join us at the Zoom link above, or go to zoom.us/join, enter Meeting ID
847 6897 7211 and click "Join." For more information about Pacem in Terris, click here.
No Weekly Word on These Dates
Thursdays, July 2 and July 23
We understand how important it is to stay connected with you during these extraordinary times, so the Weekly Word will not have its usual "every other week" reduced schedule in June and July. Instead, there will only be three weeks when we will not have a Weekly Word - June 18, July 2, and July 23. Please make a note of these dates and schedule your announcements accordingly. If you have questions, please contact Nicole Hughes at [email protected].

Coming Up
Support our International Mission Partners
The global impact of COVID-19 is unprecedented. For those already living in vulnerable communities around the world, the effects of this crisis are even more devastating. In response, Westminster's Church in the World Committee is offering a special ECHO Giving campaign during May and June. Gifts can be designated to directly support emergency relief projects of partners in Congo, Guatemala, Palestine and Syria. For details and to contribute, please use this form. Each week, we will highlight one of these projects in detail (we are highlighting Palestine again below). Thank you for being part of God's light shining through the darkness.
COVID Relief for Palestine
The Gaza Strip in Palestine is one of the most vulnerable locations in the world for a massive COVID-19 outbreak due to broken infrastructure, highly dense population, and barriers surrounding the territory. Palestine's very poor health care system was collapsing even before the pandemic. Urgent help is needed to better detect and treat children and their families with COVID-19. Help ensure COVID-19 does not get a foothold and is defeated in the Middle East by buying a share(s) in a portable X-ray machine through the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF). To donate by mail or online, click here for instructions. For more information about PCRF, visit www.pcrf.net.
Hanover Food Pantry Collection
Sunday, July 5, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. in the WPC parking lot
The Hanover Food Closet needs our continued help to restock their shelves due to the increased demand. They are especially in need of protein items such as peanut butter and canned meats and fish, as well as soups, pasta sauce, canned vegetables, and fruit. Until Westminster reopens and the Beddies are able to return, Polly and Jim Carter will be in the parking lot (near the stairs), with their masks and gloves on to collect your donations. Just drive up, pop your trunk, and they will remove the food from your car. Safe and easy!
180 Youth
Thursday, July 9, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.
at Delcastle Park
(2920 Duncan Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808)
Rising 6th-12th graders are invited for Ultimate Frisbee and Capture the Flag at Delcastle Park! Masks must be worn at all times. This event will only go on if we have enough players, so email Chesna ( [email protected]) by July 5 if you are planning to come.
Sanctuary Flowers
Dates available in July and August
Consider giving the flowers for Sunday worship to remember or honor loved ones or to celebrate an event, while expressing praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at (302) 571-6719 or [email protected]. The next available dates are July 19, 26; August 2, 23 and 30.
Zoom to Better Days?
Sunday mornings, September 27 - November 22 (8 weeks) on Zoom
(exact time to be determined)
While society may be anxious for us to zoom through our grief, Ecclesiastes guides us towards a time to mourn and a time to heal. If you've experienced a recent loss, please consider joining the Better Days Grief Support Group this fall, which has now moved online for participants' comfort and safety. We've added a self-care dimension to our program. We will modify our start time on Sundays in order to prioritize worship and allow travel time back home prior to our Zoom meetings. Please contact Jill Getty ( [email protected]) with any questions and/or to obtain a registration form.

During our Church in the World Committee's special ECHO Giving campaign in May and June, the sanctuary was decorated beautifully each week (thank you Camilla Jones!) to represent emergency relief initiatives of our international mission partners. This week, due to underfunding, we once again ask for your support of the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (see announcement above).

the Word!
Westminster's Peace & Justice Work Group is active within our church and our community as we focus on combating violence in Wilmington and promoting racial justice. Due to recent events in our country on racial issues, we welcome everyone to join with us in our education programs, advocacy efforts, interfaith/interchurch projects and open dialogues. You can help spread the word by sharing our posts on the WPC Facebook page to let your family, friends and neighbors learn what's happening and invite them to join in this essential work! If you have questions, please contact Sue Linderman ( [email protected] or 302-239-7650). Thank you for spreading the news!
