Opportunity through Education

The Willow School Makes a Difference for Children in Rural Kenya

Last October, a very dedicated volunteer - Deborah Herman - introduced Kiwimbi's Executive Director, Olubayi Olubayi, and Manager, Catherine Malalah, to The Willow School in Gladstone, NJ. They spoke to fifth graders about Kiwimbi's work with children in Kenya. The Willow students were inspired and motivated to help and set up a "money collection box" with the slogan Give Some Change to Make A Change. The students were able to raise over $500 for the children in Kenya!

During this visit, a child whose uncle heads a family foundation, sat quietly in the audience contemplating a decision. His uncle had asked him to reflect on which non-profit he would like to support. A few days later, he returned to school with a check for $1,000 for Kiwimbi.

". ..an electrical current of goodness ripped through the fifth grade as the child stood in front of his peers and shared his thinking with them on why he chose Kiwimbi. He connected to the  talk about service. He connected to the visit to The Willow School and to our classroom. He connected to the fifth grade's desire to make a difference. When given the opportunity to step forward, he chose to support Kiwimbi."
