Windmill for June 8, 2023

By PP Dwight Heikkila

Wendy Caldwell is a lecturer, vocal coach at UCLA, and music performer who graduated with a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, receiving the Birks Medal in Music as the top graduate. Today, she introduced us to student Tivoli Treloar whose credentials are as impressive.

Tivoli is a powerful, engaging, and animated mezzo soprano who recently graduated from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. She will be going on to obtain a Masters in Music in Vocal Arts with a full Kovner Fellowship Scholarship to Julliard.

This was a wonderful performance with Wendy on the piano, Tivoli thrilled us with four selections from various operas, her BIG, clear voice filling the room and putting us all in a trance. We understand how the LA Time and NY Times gave her glowing reviews in her debut performance with the Long Beach Opera where she sang the role of The Lover in the world premiere of Kate Soper’s, “The Romance of the Rose.”

Singing in Italian, German, and Spanish, she delighted us with light-hearted arias and flexible expressions and gestures. Admiral and PP Ed Gauld joined her with a rendition of “How Great Thou Art,” which was very enjoyable indeed.

As President Chris expressed at the end of the performance, “Tivoli, we look forward to seeing you someday soon at Carnegie Hall!! She was fabulous.

Thank you to Mikka from Croatia, Robert (Pres. Chris’ friend) from London, Don Caldwell, Wendy’s Husband and Sara Huang, UCLA Rotaract for visiting this week.

Shout out to Roozbeh for leading the pledge, PP Tom Barron’s Thought of the Day about D-Day’s 79th anniversary and, PP Ed Gauld’s rendition of “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” accompanied by Wendy Caldwell.
