The Rotary meetings have returned to Hillel. President Ben Fisher opened the meeting at 12:30.
New member Sam Botbol was today’s greeter, Bill Roen led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Aaron Donahue read the 4-way test.
For the thought of the day Jim Crane discussed the fourth part of Rotary’s 4-way test: “Will it be beneficial to all concerned?” People should work together to get things done, and selfishness is self-defeating.
Ed Gauld led the US Navy’s song “Anchors Aweigh” and mentioned that he is going to attend a gala event on the USS Iowa. The keynote speaker at the event will be Ed’s godson who is a 3-star admiral in charge of the 3rd fleet which covers an area from San Diego to Alaska.
Visiting Rotarians included today’s speaker Kim Lorenz and former district governor Guity Javid who is a member of the Rancho Park club.
Also visiting were Eden Elfassy and Jarrad Dudley who were guests of Sam Botbol.
President Ben Fisher introduced today’s speaker Kim Lorenz, whom he met at the Rotary International convention in Singapore. Kim Lorenz has been a Rotarian for decades and is a member of the Rotary club of Bellevue, Washington. He is a major donor to Rotary and is a member of the Arch Klumph Society.
Kim Lorenz has been acting as a liaison between Rotary and World Vision. World Vision is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) which operates projects in parts of the world facing difficulties. It coordinates with Rotary and with local NGOs. The organization emphasizes child protection, clean water, protection of the environment, and disaster management. The projects coincide with Rotary’s Seven Areas of Focus.
Kim Lorenz earned an MBA from the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. Currently he is a motivational speaker as well as a best-selling author on Amazon.com. He discussed his book, “Tireless—Key Principles that Drive Success – Beyond Business School”. The book includes stories, life lessons, and a discussion of opportunities. Its target audience includes people between the ages of 20 and 40 years old. Kim Lorenz encourages people to recognize an opportunity and to act upon it and states that nothing stops a person who is determined to achieve a goal. People should be aware of their sub-conscious thoughts and act upon them as appropriate.
Kim Lorenz mentioned that people should recognize negativity and should change the subject into something positive. He said that there is almost always a different way of looking at something. His goal is to teach tools essential for business success beyond what is taught in business schools.
Kim Lorenz also discussed his personal experiences. After he finished college, he worked at a large tire company. When a trucking company kept ordering more tires, he investigated and discovered that the company’s procedures were inefficient. He has solved problems for large companies such as Paccar, Boeing, Michelin. He founded two successful companies and later sold them to Fortune 500 companies.
At the end of the meeting books were available for purchase, and Kim Lorenz autographed them. When asked why a retired person should purchase a book, he suggested giving one as a guide to a younger person.
Former district governor Guity Javid spoke about environment projects including projects to combat climate change and for regenerative agriculture. She is also concerned with mental health issues. She has been able to raise over $400,000 for projects by receiving funds from various districts and obtaining matching funds and grants.
This was an afternoon of informative and inspirational presentations.
