Having been abandoned by those celebrating Yom Kippur, PPx2 Diane Good presided over the meeting. She began by reminding everyone this year’s theme is UNITE FOR GOOD (which of course, I could not agree with more), and wishing a happy, healthy Yom Kippur to those celebrating.
Pres. Diane then thanked PPx2 Steve Day for being an exceptional greeter, Jim Meyer for doing a wonderful job of leading the pledge, Jim Crane for his prayer and thought for the day, and PP & Maestro Ed Gauld for leading us all in song singing “You’re a Grand Ole Flag.”
There were no visiting Rotarians or guests at today’s meeting which was held at the Salvation Army Westwood Village.
Before continuing with “This Week in History” Pres. Diane recognized Jane Goodall’s passing and spoke of how she was a messenger of peace and a strong advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world. She was also a strong supporter of Rotary. A woman who gave those who would listen, hope, she will be greatly missed.
For this week in history, in 1863, President Lincoln signed a proclamation establishing Thanksgiving as an official holiday; 1954 the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine launched by the US Navy; 1967, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in becoming the first African American Supreme Court Justice and, in 1966 the Chevrolet Camaro officially went on sale to the public becoming an iconic car that symbolized American style.
PP Tom Barron was then introduced as the entertainment for the day, and he did not disappoint. He told his attorney jokes (sorry PP Chris Bradford and PP Ron Lyster) and then led a discussion on gun control which segway into a discussion on whether the Dodgers would win the World Series or not.
Most importantly though, the final discussion was on whether or not UCLA Football would win its Saturday game against Penn State. Lots of chuckles in the room on that question except for Bill Roen. A true blue & gold UCLA fan, he stayed very firm that UCLA would give a great showing if not win it all on Saturday and he was right. He has bragging rights this Thursday at the next Rotary meeting! Well done Bill, well done.
The meeting ended a few minutes early after a lunch of pizza and salad as this writer felt a need to change it up!
