Westwood Virtual Rotary Club Meeting for September 9th, 2021

PP Tom Barron led the meeting today and opened by reminding the group we would be
meeting in-person once again November 4th unless of course…well, you know the drill!  Bill
Roen took over and led the pledge with PP Mark Rogo following with the 'Thought of the Day'
by reciting a Rosh Hashanah prayer celebrating the Jewish New Year. PP & Maestro Ed Gauld
sang solo, “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” in celebration of Labor Day. When
complimented on being able to hit the high notes, PP Ed responded by admitting to wearing
tight briefs (too much information)!

PP Tom took control back of the meeting for announcements
A. Today is California Admissions Day as he was reminded by Sally Brant. He then gave a
shout out to Sally and told her how we all missed seeing her in person.
B. October 1st at 6pm the WVRC will host a wine tasting at the beautiful home of Jim and
Eleanor Meyer. Drinkers are asked to bring a bottle of their favorite wine while non-
drinkers are responsible for the appetizers. Please RSVP to PP Tom by email.
C. From 9-11 thru 10-24 District 5280 will be collecting donations for Camp
Pendleton. Especially needed are baby clothes, diapers, and household goods.
D. September 18th is the District’s Vocational Literacy Breakfast on ZOOM. Registration and
information is on the District’s website.
EOctober 6th at 6pm is the Foundation Dinner in-person at the Skirball Center. More
information to follow soon. In the meantime, PP Diane Good will be collecting items to
provide an auction basket from the Club for the event.  Please contact her with any
donations (wine/UCLA items) you would like to contribute.
F.  PP Aly Shoji thanked PP Chris Bradford for his work on the District’s Ambassadorial
Scholarship program. He has done and continues to do a great job with this.

The Program then took a wild turn with PP Tom leading the way with quizzes, very colorful humor, and the NFL Kickoff week!! PP Ed Gauld began with a “Senior Moments” quiz that included questions about the Lone Ranger, the Beatles, the Shadow, Red Skelton’s Hobo character and, Alka Seltzer commercials.  It was amazing how many “young members” knew the
answers to the questions! He ended by reminding all married members to not laugh at their
spouse’s choices since they are one of them!!

PP Tom followed with some Tom Barron humor by asking everyone “What animal kills more
people annually than any other?” Donkeys – which is why you better be watching your
ass!! Staying with the theme he then asked, “What animal breathes through its butt?” (do we
really need to know??) A turtle he tells us and, how does he know this???  Tough act to follow
but PP Mark Rogo did with his “Only in America” humor.  He told us, “Only in America do drug
stores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while
healthy people can buy cigarettes up front!”; and “Only in America do you have drive-up ATM
machines with braille lettering!?”. He gave quite a few examples and probably could have gone
on for the rest of the meeting but, it was time for.....

PP Ron Lyster to give a travel quiz with pictures.  We visited, El Capitan Canyon, Niagara
Falls, the Jefferson Memorial, Gold’s Beach, Kilimanjaro, Shanghai, Thailand, Victoria Falls,
Istanbul, Alaska, Canada, Antarctica, and the Amazon. It made everyone yearn to travel
again! PP Tom followed PP Ron with “Words of Wisdom” providing quotes from Albert Einstein,
Mohammad Ali, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Sowell, Buddy Hackett, Ann Landers, and Robin
Williams. This included a question from Al McGuire asking, “Why do kamikaze pilots wear
helmets???” Great question!

Finally, and in a good way, we had our NFL Kick-Off week starting with what else – a quiz!! I
think the answer to two of the questions was Brett Favre and Steve Young but, who cares!  We
finished the very fun and entertaining meeting by receiving a team or two ($5-$10.00 for the pool) as our Super Bowl pick for the season.  All I can say is “GO DOLPHINS!!!”
