Thank you to all those who support
the Library in so many ways.

I want to thank all of you out there who support
the Library as volunteers, and who contribute
to our Annual Membership Drive...
By Dinah Wolff, President
I write this letter fresh off working on this year's Spaghetti Supper (a sell- out!
),
and just as we look forward to the holiday season, and all that comes with it. This was my first year co-chairing the Supper (thank you, Melissa Wilson!), and the experience has served to reinforce my appreciation for the members of the Board who helped to make this event succeed. Since many offer to repeat what they've done in previous years, their expertise means we don't have to reinvent the wheel on an annual basis.
As her way of giving back to the community, Dona Baratta opens Jack's Outback II every year for this event, providing her space and the main dish, while we do the rest; we are truly grateful for this act of generosity. Please visit Jack's for a delicious breakfast or lunch at 161 Route 6A. It's located in the rear of the parking lot there -"out back."
Following were several genealogy workshops (we hosted two of three sessions offered by the Genealogical Society of Cape Cod), the Northside String Band's patriotic music in honor of Veterans' Day on November 10th, and of course, the Christmas Stroll on Sunday, December 2, where volunteer bakers always offer a huge variety of goodies. Next time you visit the Library, take time to appreciate the unique interior of this 1870
building we all work so hard to preserve.
I want to thank all of you out there who support the Library as volunteers, an
d who contribute to our Annual Membership Drive, enabling us to
survive; although we are open to the public, the Library is not supported by the Town of Yarmouth (other than by its nominal fee of $500 in return for its use of our statistics). Please watch
for our letter in early December - your donations are what keep us going.

Buy a unique hand knit gift and help benefit YPL.
Donations welcome.
Just in Time for the Holidays!
Starting after Thanksgiving week, the Library's knitters will again be selling small hand knit items, such as hats, mittens, socks, and scarves, to benefit the library. Hand knit baby things, cuddly creatures, novelty items, and tree ornaments are welcomed as well.
Now in its sixth year, this sale has increased in popularity, so in addition to the efforts of the Library's Knitting Group, we welcome donations from anyone in the community. If you're interested in participating, please bring your hand knit contributions to the Library, and give them to anyone behind the Circulation Desk.
We ask that you label your items with your name, size, yarn content, and any relevant washing instructions, and we thank you in advance for helping to support our library.
The Library's Knitting Group meets on the 1

Mondays at 9:30 AM in the Reading Room, and welcomes knitters of all levels.

Seasons Greetings to One and All! I look forward to spending time with you here at YPL in the coming New Year.
As we approach the holiday season I'd like to give thanks to all of you. Patrons young and old are our reason for existing. And you make it so much fun. Coming to work means spending another day among friends, helping each other, talking about books, swapping stories, and sharing our love of reading. What could be better? We couldn't do it without you. We wouldn't want to! So, thank you.
The
Children's Room
is featuring a lot of new picture books this month. We have some beautiful ones like Dreamers by Yuyi Morales, some funny ones like
Team Steve
by Kelly Collier, and some informative ones like
Apollo 8: The Mission That Changed Everything
by Martin Sandler and
Endurance
by Scott Kelly. We also have new books on Minecraft and building dinosaurs with Legos. If you are looking for ideas for holiday gifts, before you hit your local bookstore (or Amazon) why not stop by and take a look?
Our monthly
Story Times
for toddlers continue on the second Friday of each month at 11 AM. I finally figured out how to make a playlist and attach a wireless speaker to my phone so we've added dancing at the end of the story time. Can you sing Baby Shark? Join us! Though the program is geared towards birth to 3, kids of all ages are welcome.
"Everyone is Welcome!"
Denya LeVine is still entertaining us on the last Friday of each month at 11 AM. Come sing, dance, and play instruments with her. This year we are adding in a new feature. In addition to the world music and dance, we'll be throwing in some "culture." Each month we will feature a little bit about a different country. All ages, nationalities, and capabilities are invited. The new name for this program is "Everyone is Welcome!"

YPL - A valuable asset to the community and to you.
Check out the "Value Calculator."
|
By Leslie Altman, Co-Librarian
We all know that the Yarmouth Port Library is an important neighborhood resource for our community. If you attended the Spaghetti Supper, you could feel the excitement of our coming together. Now you can also calculate the financial benefit of your library.
On our webpage is a link to the
"value calculator,"
a way to add up the benefits of all the resources we have for you: not just books, but museum passes, DVDs, Ebooks, programs, newspapers, and more. If you don't use a computer, at the circulation desk we can show you how to do the calculations.
We are also planning to continue our series of
public service programs
. This winter we are scheduling another talk on energy efficiency by a representative from Cape Save. As a result of last winter's talk, several patrons took advantage of Cape Save's free energy assessment. Several of those patrons also had work completed to increase their energy efficiency, at a substantially lower cost or even cost-free. The YPL received a $100 donation from Cape Save for all who completed work: a win-win situation!
We also invite you to check out the southeast corner of the building, where we have a new way for you to find books on home decorating and repair, fine art, travel, and subjects of local interest, from local flora and fauna to our "blue" economy. (That's whales and sailing, among other topics, for those unfamiliar with the term.)
CLAMS has now made Encore its default program for catalog searches. If you prefer the Classic Catalog, you can chose it when you log into the CLAMS website. The Encore program has been improved in response to your suggestions. If you are having trouble with using the catalog, with OverDrive or Libby, or with any of your own electronic devices, either old or new, come into the YPL and we will do our best to help.
Happy holidays to you all!

By Les Peat, Chair, the Membership Committee
At about the same time that this issue of The Yardarm is published, letters are going out to past, present, and future Library members, urging them to support the Library with membership donations for the calendar year 2019. This might be a good time to clear up what seem to be common misunderstandings about the membership program - and for that matter, about the Library itself.
First things first. It is surprising how often we are asked whether we are a public library; the answer is "yes." Are we publicly financed? No, though at one time we were. Here's how we acquired our current status.
The Library was founded in 1866 as a private subscription library - though with a subscription so modest that nearly all residents could afford to subscribe. That arrangement lasted until the Great Depression of the 1930s, when the Library began to seek public funding. Public support grew steadily over the years, and around 1990, we became a branch library within the Town of Yarmouth's library system. The Trustees did, however, retain ownership of the building, the land, and some private endowment funds.
In 2008, faced with a financial crisis over school funding, the Town proposed to close the Yarmouth Port Library. The Trustees, not wishing to lose the only library in town north of Route 28, decided to keep the Library open, assuming responsibility for all but $500 of the annual cost of operations - an amount that we continue to receive from the Town. That $500 allows us to remain technically a municipal library and therefore a member of the CLAMS network. Of course that amount is but a tiny fraction of our $160,000 annual operating budget, and this brings us to the subject of Library memberships.
Not having sufficient funds to fully cover operating costs, the board decided to create a membership program to bridge the gap. It seems to be a common misconception that any Yarmouth Port resident with a CLAMS card is a member; that is not the case. Anyone with a CLAMS card is entitled to Library privileges, and in this sense we remain, as we always have been, a public library, free and open to all. To be a member, however, requires a modest (or perhaps not so modest) annual financial commitment to help the Library to remain the important village institution that it has always been.
It is surprising how often we are asked whether
we are a public library; the answer is "yes."
Are we publicly financed? No, though at one time we were.
Each year, on or about December 1st, we solicit membership contributions for the coming calendar year, and we continue to accept such contributions until June 30th, the end of our fiscal year. (After June 30th, payments are credited to the next calendar year.) Basic memberships are currently $30 for an individual and $50 for a dual/family membership. Those who have the means to do so are urged to contribute larger amounts ranging from $100 to $1,000 or more. An annual list of donors by membership category is published annually in the June issue of
The Yardarm.
Our membership program has been very successful, helping to keep us on a sound financial footing. We urge every Library user who is not yet a member to join with his or her friends and neighbors in keeping the Yarmouth Port Library the vital community resource it remains today.
