After eleven years as a Liability Claims Specialist with Landstar, a global transportation and logistics business located in Jacksonville, John Neff decided to pursue an MBA with a concentration in marketing at UNF. One of the courses in his curriculum included Logistics and Supply Chain Management offered through UNF Division of Continuing Education.
According to Neff, the instructors of the course, Brett Harper and Ron Shamlaty, provided "real-world examples throughout [their] lectures that made understanding the concepts much easier".
Neff also found the material in the course to be fascinating. So much so, he actually decided to change his concentration from marketing to logistics. Unfortunately, he was missing five prerequisite courses required to pursue a concentration in logistics.
He applied to the head of the department for a waiver of college policy which included submitting his resume and a letter explaining why the department should waive the rules. Luckily, he was approved for the concentration change. Not only did his longevity at an industry leader and previous accomplishments enter into the decision to waive the five prerequisites, but Neff believes that his attendance and knowledge gained in the Logistics and Supply Chain Management course played an instrumental role in the final determination.
When asked for comment, Ron Shamlaty offered, "The UNF Continuing Education Department just completed its inaugural offering of The University of North Florida Logistics Certificate Program. John Neff, from Landstar, was one of the students that completed this four-month program. John was an outstanding student and helped facilitate excellent discussions within our class by drawing upon his years of experience in the logistics field. John is pursuing further education in the field of logistics and most certainly is a major asset and contributor to his company."
"Our goal at the UNF Division of Continuing Education is to provide a wide variety of lifelong learning opportunities for everyone. We are pleased that one of our courses was able to make a difference in John Neff's academic trajectory, his career and ultimately, his future," states Edythe Abdullah, Dean of UNFCE.
Whether you want to enhance your career path, prepare for a new job, expand your personal skills and abilities or learn with likeminded friends and engage new acquaintances, the Division of Continuing Education has a program for you. If you would like to read John Neff's letter, click

Dennis Egan was the Featured Speaker for the January Session of the Osprey PALs Program
Dennis Egan, a volunteer instructor for OLLI at UNF (Chemistry in Everyday Life), presented a program titled, “No Way – Chemistry in Everyday Life.” He immersed the Osprey PAL kids into the field of chemistry, describing how it impacts daily life, particularly in business, industry, information technology and big data. He illustrated that chemistry can be found everywhere, in the food you eat, the air you breathe, the clothes you wear, literally every object you can touch. The fact that he encouraged the students to get involved with hands-on demonstrations made the hour-long class feel like just a few minutes. Toward the end of the program, Dennis described the amazing and rapid changes that have occurred over the past 60 years in chemistry. He even projected future educational and career opportunities for the students to consider.
OLLI at UNF is self-organized members working together to create and deliver educational, cultural and social opportunities for lifelong learners age 50 and better. As partners with Osprey PALS, the UNF Division of Continuing Education is pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to the educational, career and personal development of teens and young adults in Jacksonville.
