Welcome back to this belated edition of the WB. I have no excuse for my tardiness. I could blame floods, fire, and plague but honestly the late arrival of this edition is mostly me having a lovely summer with our beautiful, blended family including getting to know our recent addition of a newborn baby girl!! (She was not late on arriving). However, the impact of the fires, flooding and Covid are significantly affecting our work as therapists as we help our clients regulate their nervous systems which have become dysregulated, and they are coping the best they can through a variety of addictive and unhealthy behaviours.

Birthing a Book

Birthing a book involves labour, and the gestation period can be variable. In the case of the Satir Writers Group, the gestation period has been about three years. Of course, there were complications along the way, like concussions, illnesses, computers pitching themselves into deep water, and bad falls, but the writers persisted. Our group formed in 2017 and began gathering with John Banmen with the purpose of updating the SIP curriculum with more body-focused content. Each member of the group was engaged in using the body and its energy in trainings, but not much was reflected in written form. We explored how SIP was currently teaching the use of the body, the energy around and within the body, and spiritual nature of Satir's work, with the idea of updating the training manuals. Every few months our group would meet again, to discuss and explore different aspects of these topics.

President’s Message for the Wisdom Box

The story and our experience of the summer months in British Columbia, other parts of Canada, the USA, Europe, and Asia has been dominated in many places by excessive heat, forest fires and flooding. There have been multiple stories that capture the whole range of human responses and emotions to these stressful events.

I wonder how our SIP members are coping both at a professional and personal level with all of this.  I would encourage anyone to share your experience, reflections, and impact of these events in The Wisdom Box. How has your knowledge and practice of the Satir Model been useful in these challenging times for yourself and your work with clients and in communities?

Susanna Wong goes to Prison-To do Family Reconstruction in Hong Kong

I want to report on a special opportunity to do Family Reconstruction in a prison in Hong Kong. Usually, prison visit is limited to 15 minutes and only one pre-approved person is allowed each time.

I was invited by the Psychologist of the Prison Department to do something to help the female inmates, so I decided to try Family Reconstruction. Of course, with the time constraint, the Family Reconstruction I did was in a small scale. But it was allowed for the first time in the prison history in Hong Kong to do this......

2:00 pm to 7:15 pm Pacific Time

(4.5 hours of training each session)

Includes 2 breaks 15 min and 30 min each

It would be presented to those who use the Satir Model in a helping profession, or students preparing for such a profession. This three-part online workshop will focus on the context and experience of the role of the body in the therapy process, how to experience and track both your own and your client’s internal state, and access the clues and wisdom inside the body, integrating it into the therapeutic experience. Participants will also learn tools for self-monitoring and self-referencing. The program will aid professionals in becoming more competent, more confident and more congruent....

Hold the date!

The next Vancouver Island Satir Zoom gathering/fireside chat will be on:

Saturday September 30, 2023 from 9:30 – 11:00 am.

This will be our fall season gathering. We will be sending a Zoom link closer to that date.

Anyone who has relocated to Vancouver Island is most welcome to join us.

Our gatherings are here to offer support, solace, encouragement, applause, validation and deep connection for our heart based Satir community. Contact Wendy at welum@shaw.ca and you can be added to our Vancouver Island Satir list.

This year we continued to meet on Zoom in Jan for our winter

gathering, and then in June for our spring gathering. Initially we have attempted to meet four times a year to acknowledge the four seasons. Some comments were: “my heart is filled up and full of connection”, “Balm for the soul”, “Deep sense of belonging”. We were joined by Leona, Christine, Julie, Mary, Shelley, Chris, Barb in one or both meetings. We did not manage to fit in a summer get together. As life has opened up, we all needed a free and open summer to relax, see family and friends, and get into nature!

Scholarship news from Wendy and John

Steven Keeler is embarking on becoming a supervisor/trainer and teaching the ethics and epistemology of the work of Virginia Satir (and other things) to new counsellors.

Also beginning in January, his counselling practice will accept more interns and newly registered counsellors in both Coquitlam and Vancouver Island.
