"Heaven & Earth Collide in the New Testament"

Beginning next week, our Wednesday night worship series will continue a journey we began in the fall by exploring those moments in Scripture when heaven and earth collide. In the Old Testament, we traced that collision through gardens and rivers, burning bushes and mountains, temples and times of silence, dreams, and seasons of scarcity. Again and again, we discovered that God’s presence was not confined to one place or one moment, but broke into ordinary human life in unexpected ways.

This year, we will turn our attention to the New Testament and ask a similar question: Where do we see heaven and earth coming together now? What does that collision look like when God steps fully into human history through Jesus Christ? And how does that same holy meeting continue in the life of the church, in communities and relationships, in suffering and joy, and in the rhythms of ordinary faithfulness?

Over the course of 14 weeks, we will walk through encounters where heaven and earth meet in flesh and water, wilderness and storms, tables and roads, upper rooms and gardens, grief and resurrection, fear and power. We will pay attention not only to places and events, but to people and experiences, moments when God’s nearness becomes visible, tangible, and transformative. These stories span different time periods, communities, and living situations, reminding us that God’s presence is not limited to ideal circumstances or spiritual mountaintops.

The goal of this series is not simply to study where heaven and earth collided back then, but to become more attentive to how they still collide today. Often, we miss these moments, not because God is absent, but because we do not recognize what we are looking for.

When I’m in Kroger or Target trying to pick something up for Whitney and can’t find it, she used to send me a picture of the item on her phone and say, “It looks like this.” Once I could actually see what I was looking for, I could find it much more quickly. These days, she just places a pickup order and tells me which parking spot to use, saving her the headache of my frantic texts and phone calls asking where everything is. But before that, the picture mattered. It helped me recognize what I would have otherwise walked right past.

The same thing happened with our boys just before Christmas. When asking for a specific Lego, pair of shoes, or shirt, they didn’t try to describe it to us. Instead, they pulled up a picture online and showed it to us. Once we had seen it, we knew exactly what we were looking for.

In many ways, Scripture does the same thing for us. It gives us images, stories, and encounters that help us visualize what it looks like when heaven and earth come together. When we begin to recognize those patterns, grace breaking into weakness, peace speaking into chaos, love kneeling to serve, hope rising from grief, we become better prepared to notice them in our own lives.

This series is an invitation to slow down, to look closely, and to learn to see. As we trace these New Testament encounters together, my hope is that we will not only deepen our understanding of Scripture, but also grow more attentive to the quiet, powerful ways God continues to meet us here and now. Heaven and earth still collide. The question is whether we are prepared to recognize it when they do.

I hope you’ll join us on Wednesday nights, beginning January 14 at 6:30, as we continue this journey together.

Help Us Meet Our Lottie Moon Goal

The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering is collected annually to support international missions. Our church goal is $5,200, and we are only about $125 shy of meeting that goal. Please use a Lottie Moon envelope or mark your donation with a memo notating Lottie Moon so that we can meet and exceed our goal! Thank you!

2026 Offering Envelopes

2026 giving envelopes are available on the children's hall. If you cannot find your envelopes and would like a set, please let Patsy Talbert know so that she can issue them to you.

2025 Contribution Statements

Please note that contribution statements from last year are ready to be picked up in the church office (weekdays) or at the Welcome Center (Sundays). Picking up your statement saves us the postage of having to mail it at the end of the month. Thank you!

Christian sympathy is extended to Sherry Wiggins and family in the death of Chubby Wiggins December 27th; and to Barbara Shank, Amy & Jim Thurston, and family in the death of husband and father Leonard Shank December 27th.

Donations for Local Schools

Our Adopt-a-School Committee is collecting boxes of tissues and containers of disinfecting wipes for our local schools to help them navigate flu and cold season. Our goal is to supply each teacher at Herman L. Horn, W.E. Cundiff, and William Byrd Middle and High Schools with a box of tissues and some disinfecting wipes. We need at least 225 of each. A collection box is located at the Missions Tables. You are welcome to shop on your own. If you prefer to order from Amazon and have your donation shipped directly to us, please click here for an Amazon link. Donations will be accepted through the first week in February.

Bible Reading Plan

Thanks to everyone who read through our Bible Reading Plan in 2025! Please let me know who you are! You can email me or call 540-343-7685.

The plan for 2026 is available at the Welcome Center and by clicking here. It's not too late to join us; we're only a few chapters into Joshua.

You can also access our current plan through the VBC app. If you don't already have the VBC app, just go to your app store and search for Vinton Baptist Church VA. You'll recognize our logo (the brown cross inside the blue/green circle). Download the app, open it, and click on the "Bible Reading Plan" at the very bottom of the screen. Once the Bible opens up, click on "Plan." You can read through the daily scripture yourself, or you can click the PLAY icon, and the scripture will be read to you. Then check The Witness each week for our discussion based on current readings.

We've read through the first 7 chapters of Joshua, and something jumped out at me this morning while I was listening to Joshua 7. In the first chapter of Joshua, God twice tells Joshua, "Be strong and courageous" (v. 7, 9). The Israelites repeat that refrain to Joshua in verse 18. The context - in all cases in this chapter - is faith in and obedience to God. In other words, if you are faithful to God and obey him, there is no need to fear.

However, in chapter 7 we find that the Israelites are defeated in battle at Ai. Verse 5 states, "At this the hearts of the people melted in fear and became like water." They could not display strength or courage at this point. Why? Because someone had been disobedient and unfaithful, and there were consequences. Achan had stolen some of the spoils of war that God had commanded the Israelites not to take. But the consequences were not for Achan alone; the Israelites suffered as a whole. God explained to Joshua, "Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies ...." (v. 11-12a). Achan receives his own punishment, along with his family (v. 24-26), but here God holds the entire community responsible - to an extent - for the sin of an individual.

I find in this narrative an important reminder that none of us in God's family lives and operates alone. Community is much more important among God's people than we often recognize. The sins of one (or a few) can affect an entire group. May we walk wisely in God's Word and follow his path to the best of our ability, recognizing that we each have more influence in our community of believers than we might realize.
