This year our church goal is $2,450, and we are currently about $1,000 short. Will you help us meet our goal? There are special envelopes in your box of envelopes and also in the pew pockets in the sanctuary. You may also give online and designate your gift for Annie Armstrong. Thank you!

Please join us in officially welcoming William & Leslie Bake, Liam, and Lucy to Vinton Baptist Church. William and Leslie joined VBC this past Sunday by letter from Hope Lutheran Church in Iowa. Their address is 3955 Poplar Grove Drive, Vinton VA 24179.

Bible Reading Plan

We are scheduled to finish Leviticus by next Tuesday, April 1st. You're doing a great job keeping up with our reading plan! Following is an excerpt from A Theological Introduction to the Old Testament (Birch, Brueggemann, Fretheim, & Petersen) that helps us understand these last few chapters of Leviticus:

Leviticus 17-26, known as the Holiness Code, . . . centers on behaviors and rituals that promote communal stability in the interrelated spheres of daily life and worship. Key to their force is 19:2, "You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy." This does not mean that holiness is something to strive for; Israel's holiness is a reality. The call to "be holy" is a call to be true to the relationship in which the people already stand . . . . Basically, this entails being faithful to God in worship and in life. Israel's holiness is not simply an internal disposition; holistically, it is to be expressed externally in all spheres of life. What this entailed may be summed up in 19:18 . . . "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (138)

These authors go on to point out that, while all the Israelites are counted as holy, the priests have an even higher calling to holiness, thus accounting for the commands that relate specifically to the priesthood.

Next week we'll jump into the book of Numbers!

Observing Communion

It's been five years since the COVID pandemic began. Initially, we observed communion in our own homes using whatever we could find in our pantries. When we were returned to in-person worship, we began using pre-packaged elements in order to minimize potential germs. At the request of our Deacons, we will soon return to passing communion trays. Effective April 6th, communion elements will once again be hygienically prepared by our Communion Committee using juice cups that have a built-in pocket for bread. Therefore, when our Deacons pass the communion trays, there will be no other hands touching your bread. Both the bread and juice will be contained in a single cup that you can pick up from the tray as it is passed. Trays will also include pre-packaged communion elements for those who prefer to use them.

We are scheduled to observe communion on three separate occasions in April: the first Sunday of the month, Palm Sunday, and Wednesday, April 16th for our Holy Week worship service. While we will use special cups and pass the trays on April 6th, we will continue to use pre-packaged elements on the other two occasions in order to maximize our time together and minimize the demands on our Communion Committee/Deacons. If you have any questions about our upcoming observances of the Lord's Supper, please let us know.
