"Celebrate Life" Returns This Sunday!

Get ready for a beautiful musical experience as the Chancel Choir, accompanied by friends and orchestra, resurrects the legendary "Celebrate Life" musical during this Sunday's 10:30 AM worship service! This isn't just any performance—it's a revival of a 53-year musical legacy that has touched generations.

Some of our current performers were actually part of the original groundbreaking 1973 production at VBC with Music Minister Bill Elliott, when an astounding 90+ youth brought this masterpiece to life! These pioneers captured their performance on cutting-edge recording technology, mastering on reel-to-reel for what was then a revolutionary new way to experience music. The sought-after recordings were distributed on now-vintage eight-track tapes!

The musical's powerful journey continued at VBC when Carolyn Philpott breathed new life into it in 1981, leading the VBC youth choir on a wonderful tour. They captivated audiences across multiple venues—from Lewiston, Maine to the bustling Auburn Shopping Mall, from Courtland Baptist Church to FBC Christiansburg, culminating at the scenic Eagle Eyrie Baptist Conference Center. Amazingly, some of Sunday's performers were part of that sensational tour group!

When "Celebrate Life" marked its 20th anniversary in 1989, it underwent a dramatic transformation with the addition of orchestral arrangements—the version we'll be experiencing this Sunday! In planning the presentation, it became evident that original 1970’s parts were practically extinct. Securing even the updated materials for this performance was nothing short of a quest—Chris spent an incredible two years tracking down enough choral books and parts to make this revival possible!

We pray that you will be moved as this immersive musical takes you on an unforgettable journey through the gospel—from Jesus' humble birth to his glorious resurrection. The performance might extend a few minutes beyond our usual time, but trust us, every minute will be worth it! Don't miss this once-in-a-generation musical event this Sunday!

Holy Week Tenebrae Service

We invite you to join us at 6:30 PM next Wednesday, April 16th for our Holy Week Tenebrae Service as we explore the seven last words of Jesus. This service will be a time of reflection and worship as we explore various scriptures, prayers, and hymns to help us connect with Christ’s life and death during his final week. “Tenebrae” is a word derived from Latin that means “darkness” or “shadows.” Though we know the hope of Easter is coming, during this service we will remember the grief and darkness of Christ’s passion and death. We hope you will join us.

Bible Reading Plan

As we mentioned last week, the book "Numbers" is named for the censuses that it records. "The book opens with a census of the generation that experienced the Exodus from Egypt and the giving of the law. They prove to be unfaithful, are prohibited by God from entering the land, and die out in the wilderness. The second census (26) records the members of the new generation; as a sign of God's faithfulness to ancestral promises, they will enter the promised land. This new generation is the audience for the book of Deuteronomy" (A Theological Introduction to the Old Testament, Birch, Brueggemann, Fretheim, & Petersen, 141). Scholars note that Numbers begins in the location of Sinai. Starting with chapter 10, the action moves "... through the wilderness (10:11-21:35) to the plains of Moab east of the Jordan (22-36), where the people remain through Deuteronomy" (141). God's people repeatedly disobey him throughout most of Numbers and suffer the consequences. Along the way, multiple instructions are given that probably arise out of the situations in which they find themselves. The reports of the new generation who will actually enter the land (found in the last chapters of Numbers) are much more positive. Happy reading!
