Bible Reading Plan
On Monday we read through Numbers 13-14, which is the classic passage explaining how the spies were sent into the land of Canaan and returned with a report that scared the Israelites and went against God's command to enter the land. Only Joshua and Caleb encouraged the Israelites to follow God's leading. And once again the Hebrew people lashed out against their leaders and wished that they had never left Egypt. The debate was so heated that the Israelites considered stoning Caleb and Joshua (14:10)! God was so angry that he threatened to kill everyone and start over, creating a new people through Moses. Moses, though, pleaded to God on behalf of the people. God forgave them (14:20), but he also decreed their punishment - that no Israelites except Joshua and Caleb would enter the Promised Land (14:22-30). The ten spies who delivered the scary report were killed through a plague (14:37). Then - and I had forgotten this part of the story - the Israelites decided that they WOULD obey God and go into the Promised Land as he had commanded. Only it was too late. And Moses warned them that it was too late. But they tried anyway, and their enemies defeated them because God was no longer with them in that endeavor.
As I was listening to this passage, I was reminded how much I identify with the Israelites. I may hear God prompting me to do something, but I often don't have the faith to follow through with it. Then, after further consideration, I decide that I should have trusted God from the beginning, and I try to forge a path that may or may not be open to me anymore. I can sit back and criticize the Israelites' lack of faith (knowing the rest of the story), but how often do I also display this same lack of faith? And - perhaps a more helpful question - how can I trust God when my circumstances seem to contradict what he tells me to do? I would love to know how you handle these situations and how God has helped you overcome your circumstances in the past.

Thank you, church family, for the prayers, calls, cards, and visits during David's surgery and recovery. Words cannot express the peace we had during his procedure and the days that followed. Your prayers were truly felt. We are so thankful and blessed to have such a wonderful and caring church family. With love and blessings,
Debra & David Semones
