Bible Reading Plan
We have followed Numbers until the Israelites are ready to enter the Promised Land. Beginning this Saturday, we will tackle Deuteronomy and remain there until the end of May.
The following is a theological introduction to Deuteronomy that may help you as you begin to read: "Deuteronomy ('second law') derives from the Greek translation of a Hebrew phrase in 17:18, 'copy of the law.' This translation correctly conveys that Deuteronomy (a) is a law which follows upon that given at Sinai (29:1); (b) recasts various stories regarding Sinai and the wanderings as well as laws from Exodus, including the Decalogue [Ten Commandments]; (c) understands that God's law is not a matter given once and for all; it was integral to life before Sinai and develops after Sinai in view of the needs of new times and places; (d) has an authoritative role in how the first law is to be interpreted (from A Theological Introduction to the Old Testament, Birch, Brueggemann, Freitheim, & Petersen). So, although the conclusion of Numbers indicates that the Israelites are on the cusp of entering the Promised Land, Deuteronomy does not chronologically continue that story. We have to wait until we get to the book of Joshua in order to continue the chronological next steps. Instead, Deuteronomy reiterates and expands the laws conveyed through Moses.
Happy reading!

Vinton Baptist Staff & Members,
Thanks to all of you who sent cards, made calls, sent prayers, and expressed words of comfort and condolences. All of these helped me cope with the loss of my sister. Thank you, Travis, for leading the service. Your words were very comforting during this difficult time. I am thankful to be a part of Vinton Baptist Church! Sincerely,
Terrie Webber Bigler
