This Sunday @ VBC
This Sunday is Mother's Day, and we will be celebrating all mothers - those who are related to us by blood, by adoption, and by the Spirit. We will also continue in the new sermon series on Sabbath. The message is "A Mindset," and the scripture is Romans 8:5-6.
Prior to morning worship, we will have Sunday School at 9:15 AM, as usual. If you are not yet plugged into a Sunday School class, please let us help you find one to attend. You can click here for our updated Sunday School brochure.
If you can't join us in the sanctuary for worship, please do so through livestream at www.vintonbaptistchurch.org or through our Facebook page.

Graduate Info Needed
Graduate Recognition Sunday is May 18th. If you or someone in your family is graduating from high school, college, grad school, or technical school this year, please email kim@vintonbaptistchurch.org or call the church office at 540-343-7685 to let us know the following: name of graduate, school, any special honors, type of degree, future plans, and whether they will be able to attend worship May 18th. If your graduate cannot attend May 18th, we would still like to have their information so that we can recognize them in The Witness. If your graduate will attend on Graduate Sunday, they should wear their graduation regalia and meet Whitney Russell in the church library at 10:00 AM on May 18th.

Bible Reading Plan
"Deuteronomy is both an ending and a beginning. it recalls the ancestral promises and the Exodus deliverance, retells events experienced by the people at Sinai and in the wilderness, and looks forward to the time in the promised land (and beyond)," states one source on the Old Testament (A Theological Introduction to the Old Testament, Birch, Brueggemann, Fretheim, & Petersen).
Another source explains:
"The book of Deuteronomy is organized into three extended speeches of Moses, together with a concluding section that is constituted by two poems and a concluding narrative in Deuteronomy 32-34. The speeches of Moses are narratively situated at the Jordan, purporting to be Moses' 'final instructions' for Israel as Israel enters the land of promise. The ostensive purpose of the instruction is to warn Israel about the seductions of the land of Canaan and to urge Israel to adhere to its peculiar identity as YHWH's chosen people. In the rhetorical form of warning and urging, this tradition of Mosaic instruction contains some of the richest, most important, and most eloquent theological interpretation in the entire Old Testament" (An Introduction to the Old Testament, Water Brueggemann).
Deuteronomy - or part of it - is believed to be the "Book of the Law" that King Josiah's workers later found in the temple in 2 Kings 22. The first few chapters recount the exodus from Egypt and the Israelite wanderings up until they are ready to enter the Promised Land. Moses is the speaker when the book begins (1:1), and it is the death of Moses that wraps up the book (34:5). The final verses of chapter 34 are a memorial to him.
Deuteronomy is the final book in the Pentateuch. Once we finish it at the end of this month, we will skip over to Psalms and work our way through these Israelite songs over the course of the summer. Happy reading!
