The month of July has been designated as the Keystone Paper Drive month. Throughout the entire month, the JOY Seniors will collect paper products - paper plates, bowls, towels, toilet paper, napkins, etc. - to support the ministries of our local Keystone Community Center. Collection boxes will be located by the elevator in the New Ministries Building and in the Welcome Center lobby. Thank you in advance for your support!

Our next JOY Senior Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29th and will begin at 11:30 AM. Our lunch is pizza, salad, water, and (hopefully) an ice cream truck! Our program is Phone Technology with Chris Duncan from Vinton Computer. We will have youth volunteers on hand to help you with your phones. The cost is $12/person, and the deadline to sign up is Sunday, July 27th.

CBF Offering for Global Missions

The WMU invites you to give to the CBF (Cooperative Baptist Fellowship) Offering for Global Missions, which supports the long-term presence of CBF field personnel serving in the United States and around the world. 100% of your gifts go directly to this cause. Our church goal is $2,200, and as of today we need about $600 to meet that goal. There is a gold envelope dated June 1st in your box of envelopes, or simply make your gift payable to Vinton Baptist and notate “CBF Global Missions Offering” on it.

Young Adult Small Group

If you are home from college this summer, you are invited to attend our Young Adult Small Group, which meets at RND Coffee at 9:00 AM each Sunday. We understand that your summer schedule may be hectic, with work, vacations, and possibly summer classes. Even if you can’t attend every Sunday, we’d love to have you join us when you’re available. We have just begun a new study on John Mark Comer’s Practicing the Way. It is also available through Right Now Media, which is accessible 24/7 when you have to miss our small group. All ages 18 - 28ish are welcome, whether you are in college or not!

On July 13th we plan to pair our college bound high school graduates with those who are attending or have graduated from their intended colleges. Right now we have representatives from Virginia Tech, Bluefield University, and Gardner-Webb available. If you have recently graduated from high school and are headed to a different college, and if you would like to talk with someone from VBC who has already attended that school, please contact Kim Yonce as soon as possible so that she can make appropriate arrangements.

Bible Reading Plan

The Practicing the Way study series by John Mark Comer recommends praying the Psalms during your quiet time with God: "For thousands of years, followers of Jesus have used the Psalms for daily prayer. The Psalms are a collection of poetic prayers found in the middle of the Bible, and they were designed to be prayed, not just read. You can pray one psalm or pray a few; it’s up to you. You can start in Psalm 1 and keep going to pray a selection. If you want to pray one psalm, here are some we suggest you start with: Psalms 1, 23, 37, 40, 42-43, 63, 84, 86, 103, and 139."

What I have found is that many of the Psalms - as they appear in our English versions of the scriptures - are written in a way that we tend to appreciate their sentiments, but they don't necessarily match up with our idea of contemporary prayer. With just a little imagination and creativity, however, we can pray back to God these ancient words that reflect so clearly our shared existence as the people of God.

For instance, the beginning of Psalm 40 reads, "I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him" (NIV).

Generally, today we are taught to address God directly in prayer. It might seem strange to pray the above verses to God when they speak of him in the third person. However, you can use these verses as a basis to express your own prayers in your own situations. Instead of the above, you could pray something like the following: "Help me to wait patiently for you, Lord. Thank you for hearing my cries. You lift me from anxious situations and help me stand on your word and faithful love. Thank you that, because of what you've done for me, I can sing a new song in praise to you. And I pray that because of my testimony, many will put their trust in you."

Your own prayer may sound a little different, but you can tap into the convictions of each Psalmist in order to bring your praises and requests before God. I hope that you will take time to pray the Psalms today.
