We will dive deep into the Old Testament, exploring a key Bible verse each week from some of the most important Old Testament stories that set the stage for the life and ministry of Jesus as revealed in the New Testament. Through this series, we’ll return to the beginning, building a stronger understanding, faith, and trust in God’s grand story of redemption that culminates in Jesus. We’re looking forward to getting started next week!

Bible Reading Plan

This Saturday, September 7th we're scheduled to begin the epistle of 1 Corinthians. According to Fee & Stuart (How to Read the Bible Book by Book), Paul wrote 1 Corinthians while he was at Ephesus (as evidenced by 16:8) around the mid-fifties A.D. This letter is a culmination of communication that has previously taken place. Paul has formerly written to the church in Corinth (5:9), and the Corinthian church has previously written to him (7:1). Paul also notes information that he has heard about what's going on in the church at Corinth (1:11, 5:1). The tone of the letter is reformative; Paul is not happy about the behavior of the Corinthian Christians, and he is admonishing their practices. In fact, Fee & Stuart state, "First Corinthians is the most difficult of the New Testament letters to summarize, because Paul deals in turn with no less than eleven different issues, sometimes in a length similar to some of his shorter letters (2 Thessalonians, Titus)."

Fee & Stuart also maintain that understanding the history and culture of Corinth is important. The ancient city of Corinth had been "... refounded by Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. as a Roman colony" and "... had become the largest city in Roman Greece." Located on an important trade route, it had become a melting pot of various peoples and the religions of their own cultures. Immorality abounded. "So those who had become believers were from among this diverse population, both slave and free, Gentile and Jew (12:13), who brought a lot of their prior baggage with them to the Christian faith." Fee & Stuart state that one of the main themes involves "... what it means to be a person of the Spirit." These Christians' misunderstanding of what it means to live as Christians was creating behavioral problems that Paul had to deal with. That's the essential theme of 1 Corinthians. We'll learn more as we jump into this book.
