Vinton Community Playground

Our much anticipated community playground will soon be a reality! Volunteers have been doing prep work on the playground site over the past two weeks. The official build dates are October 25th - 27th, 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM. The ribbon cutting and unveiling ceremony will take place at 2:30 PM Friday, October 27th, and representatives from VBC, Boys & Girls Clubs, Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, Kaboom!, and the Town of Vinton will be involved.

Here's where we still need help to make this playground complete:

1) Volunteers remain a necessity. If you can help in any capacity, please click here to register. The build will take place rain or shine. Please come prepared for the weather in clothes that are comfortable and can get dirty or stained with paint. Water, snacks, gloves, and masks (as needed) will be provided.

2) The following tools are needed. If you could lend any of them to us, please put your name on them and they will be returned after the build: shovels, rock rakes, wheelbarrows, digging bars/poles, concrete hoes.

3) Finally, we are still in need of monetary donations for the playground fence and miscellaneous expenses. If you are able to give, please click here. Make sure that you select "Playground" under "Fund."

Thank you for supporting this community playground in so many ways! We are looking forward to all the children being able to use it - from Boys & Girls Club, VBC, and our Vinton community!!

This Sunday @ VBC

Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions

The WMU asks for your continued support of the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions. We are a little over halfway to our $2,200 goal and would love to be able to meet that goal this month.

Christian sympathy is extended to Jerry McCarty and family in the death of husband Roy G. McCarty, Jr. on October 4th; to Ann Zyki in the death of her sister Mary Reynolds of Asheville, NC on October 10th; and to Marie Crowder in the death of her niece Barbara Igo (Ruby Simms’ daughter) on October 10th.

Lost & Found

Our lost & found boxes are overflowing in the church office. If you have misplaced anything recently, please take a moment to check our boxes for your missing item(s). We have accumulated water bottles, Bibles, jewelry, eyeglasses, books, etc. The lost & found boxes are located on the counter in the church office, closest to the office door. Items remaining as of October 18th will be donated or thrown away.

Tuesday, October 10th: 47

Thank you to the Open Door Sunday School class for their donation to the Food Pantry.

Thank you to the Esther Sunday School class for their donation to Trunk-or-Treat.

Bible Reading Plan

We've been reading Esther for the past few days. Upon finishing the final chapter, I found that I had questions about the holiday of Purim that was established as a result of the events of this book. Following are a couple resources that explain more about the holiday's history, meaning, and current practice:

  • Click here for an article from the Jewish Virtual Library website.
  • Click here for a video and article from the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews website.

We have catch-up days built into our reading schedule tomorrow and Friday. Then we'll get started in Job, which is one of my favorite books in the Bible. If you haven't been following along in our Bible reading, or maybe you started and stopped earlier this year, the book of Job is a great place to jump in. Click here for a copy of our reading plan, or simply download our VBC app (search your app store for "Vinton Baptist Church VA"), click "Bible Reading Plan" on the bottom menu, click "Plan," and then either read or listen to each day's scripture being read to you. Happy reading!

Gloria Sink Memorial Coat Drive

Our annual coat drive has been renamed the Gloria Sink Memorial Coat Drive in honor and memory of Gloria. This year's collection will run throughout the month of October. Donations can be placed on the coat rack in the Welcome Center.

Specific requests for coats can be found on request cards placed around the JOY Senior bulletin board. Please note that if you have gently used coats or hoodies, they are welcome and accepted. Many of our middle and high school students actually prefer hoodies.

Donations Requested for

Boys & Girls Club Project

The Boys & Girls Club is collecting water bottles and snacks for the Vinton Police Department. The Vinton PD will be meeting with Boys & Girls Club families at their October Family Night about ways to stay safe after school, and the children want to donate water and snacks to the department as a thank you for helping keep our community safe. There is a box in the Welcome Center for donations. Thanks!

Operation Christmas Child

This year's deadline for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes is November 5th. Pick up a wrapped shoebox at church, fill it with goodies according to the accompanying brochure, and return it no later than November 5th.

Can't fill an entire box? We'd love for you to donate a few things to go into our boxes: small toys, stuffed animals, deflated soccer balls with pumps, toothbrushes, washcloths, combs/hairbrushes, pens, pencils, sharpeners, crayons, small coloring books, socks, etc. You can drop these items in the green bin underneath the OCC Missions Table.

We also welcome funds to cover shoebox shipping costs: checks can be made payable to VBC, with "OCC shoeboxes" in the memo line. If you have any questions, please see Darlene McCaskill.
