Vinton Community Playground Build Week
We're officially building a playground! There has been a tremendous amount of activity this morning, which will continue throughout the day, as we prep our site for the coming playspace. The equipment arrived by truck this morning, and we have many volunteers working on site to make this dream a reality.
| |
Tomorrow is prep day #2, and then on Friday we will assemble the playground equipment and put everything in place. If you could possibly help us Friday, please click here to fill out a volunteer registration. Friday is the day we need the most help. Even if you can't help us build the playground, EVERYONE is invited to the ribbon cutting ceremony, which will begin at 3:00 PM Friday. Please keep all of our volunteers and community partners in your prayers over the next few days. And thank you for your support! | |
This Sunday @ VBC:
5th Sunday Schedule & Trunk-or-Treat
Don't forget that we'll be on our 5th Sunday schedule this Sunday, October 29th. You're invited to Sunday School at 9:15 AM and to One Combined Worship service at 10:30 AM. Travis' sermon is "A Different Way," and the scripture is Philippians 2:12-15. If you can't make it to church in person, you can find our livestream at www.vintonbaptistchurch.org or on our Facebook group page.
We will have lunch in the gym after worship, and everyone is invited (there is no charge). Our menu is fried chicken, mashed potatoes, mac-n-cheese, slaw, and assorted desserts. Come, share a meal and fellowship with us.
| |
There will be no regular Sunday evening activities because we have TRUNK-OR-TREAT instead, 4:30 - 6:30 PM! We have over 20 trunks scheduled, as well as games and prizes organized by our Family & Recreation Committee. It looks like the weather will be great; but, if not, we'll move everything to the gym. We would love to have more individually wrapped candy/goodies for the kiddos; there is a collection bin at the Missions Tables.

Operation Christmas Child Deadline
This year's deadline for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes is November 5th (we have an early deadline this year). Here's how you can be involved:
- Pick up a wrapped shoebox at the Missions Tables, fill it with goodies according to the accompanying brochure, and return it by Sunday, November 5th. Please do NOT include toothpaste or anything edible.
- If you can't fill an entire shoebox, we ask that you donate a few items to go into the boxes: small toys, stuffed animals, Matchbox cars, jump ropes, deflated soccer balls with pumps, toothbrushes, washcloths, combs/hairbrushes, pens, pencils, sharpeners, crayons, small coloring books, socks, etc. You can drop these items off in the marked container at the Missions Tables.
- We also welcome funds to cover shoebox shipping costs: checks can be made payable to VBC, with "OCC shoeboxes" in the memo line.
- If you have any questions, please see Darlene McCaskill.

Bible Reading Plan
Now that we're several chapters into the book of Job, I hope that you find it as intriguing as I do. I hope also that last week's notes from Fee & Stuart have been helpful in understanding the book's structure and themes. Fee & Stuart maintain that the overarching theme of Job is about wisdom. They call it "a brilliant wrestling with the issue of the suffering of the righteous and the justice of God, while also speaking to the larger question, 'Where is wisdom found?" BibleProject affirms these themes, but takes a slightly different approach. Click here to see the 11-minute BibleProject video about Job.
In today's reading (Job 19 and Psalm 112), I was struck by the two contrasting chapters. Psalm 112 claims that "... the righteous will never be moved .... He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid ...." (verses 6-8a). And yet we look at the reality of Job 19 and see that Job, whom even God called "'a blameless and upright man'" (1:8), is lashing out at God, his friends, his family, etc., because, in his eyes, they have all forsaken him. How do we reconcile these two passages?
Click here for a copy of our reading plan, or simply download our VBC app (search your app store for "Vinton Baptist Church VA"), click "Bible Reading Plan" on the bottom menu, click "Plan," and then either read or listen to each day's scripture being read to you. Happy reading!
