Bible Reading Plan
We are currently in the book of Hebrews on our Bible Reading Plan. Fee & Stuart (How to Read the Bible Book by Book) explain that this letter was written to a group of people - although we don't know exactly who they were - who were mostly Jewish Christians. Because of their suffering, they were starting to doubt that Jesus was everything he claimed to be; and the author of Hebrews, who is never identified, was writing to bolster their faith. "What drives the argument from beginning to end is the absolute superiority of the Son of God to everything that has gone before.... What concerns the author is the possibility that some believers under present distress will let go of Christ and thus lose out on the Son's saving work and high priestly intercession, and thus their own experience of God's presence...." Included in this argument is an explanation of how Jesus fulfills the royal Psalms, especially Psalms 2 and 110. The exact date of the letter is unknown, although the best guess is between 50 and 69/70 AD. (The temple was destroyed in 70 AD, and Hebrews makes no mention of it, so it is assumed that this letter was probably written prior to the temple being destroyed.) It is a challenging letter for us to understand as modern Gentile believers; try to glean from it what you can. I hope this short introduction helps.
