'Real hero’: Military, veterans among thousands paying respects to Sen. John McCain in Arizona

PHOENIX — Military service members and veterans were among thousands in Arizona to gather to pay their respects to Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday at age 81.
People stood in line for hours in the Phoenix heat, carrying umbrellas and sipping cold water, to watch the motorcade transporting McCain’s body and to file past his casket at the public viewing at the Arizona Capitol building during the state’s two days of official mourning Wednesday and Thursday.
The viewing of McCain’s closed, flag-draped casket came on what would have been the Republican senator’s 82nd birthday and followed an emotional private ceremony with McCain’s family and colleagues.

I
t is that time of year again kids back in school, labor day weekend the beginning of the transition to cooler weather. We plan on keeping the bands outside as long as the weather holds out. There are still a few Sunday Fundays left for you to come down and enjoy.
Marines the National MCL has changed the dues expiration date to August 31 for everybody. With that policy change they decided to not send out renewal notifications. Therefore unless you are a lifetime member your dues are now delinquent. You can come down to the club and pick up a renewal form from one of the staff. This policy was completely out of our control and we know it has been an inconvenience to all involved except for national.

Scholarship Purpose,
Eligibility, and Requirements
|
Purpose
To grant scholarships to qualified applicants who are pursuing full time undergraduate or technical training at a recognized institution.
Eligible Sponsors
Members in good standing of Marine Corps League Worcester Detachment 144.
Sponsors must be active and attend a minimum of four monthly meetings of the Worcester Detachment 144 in scholarship award year.
Eligible Recipients
Member, spouses, children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren of the sponsor.
The sponsor’s stepchildren are also eligible.
Requirements
Applications will only be dispensed to sponsors attending a Worcester Detachment 144 monthly meeting.
Completed applications must be returned by September 1st.
If selected you must provide proof of enrollment (Verification Form) from you or your school and returned by November 15th.
Awards
$200 annually for a maximum of four years.
Years need not be consecutive years.
Checks are usually mailed in mid December.

Millions more vets to be able to shop at exchanges online
Honorably discharged veterans could be able to shop online at military exchange websites as early as Veterans Day, barring any objections from Congress.
The change in Defense Department policy would open up online exchange shopping privileges to about 18 million more people. It won’t apply to shopping at brick-and-mortar exchange stores.
