Encouraging Less Use of Plastic Shopping Bags
The District of Columbia is the leader in the nation in attempting to control plastic bags. Prompted by the accumulation of trash in the Anacostia River, the District passed an ordinance requiring any establishment that sells food or alcohol to charge five cents for each plastic disposable bag. Over the past nine years, trash in the Anacostia is down 75 percent. There's more to do, of course, but we can each do our part whether we live in the District or not. We can bring our own bags when we shop. And we can recycle plastic bags once we no longer need them. Giant and Safeway, for example, have such recycle bins.
