St. John's Refugee Committee
Sunday, January 6, 10:00 a.m.
The Refugee Committee invites you to hear Elizabeth Mandelman, the Director of Policy and Advocacy at HIAS as a Sunday speaker. Founded as the  Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in 1881 to assist Jews fleeing pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe, HIAS has been working with refugees worldwide for more than 130 years. Mandelman will speak about her experience and HIAS' approach to advocacy. She will discuss how the St. John's community can use advocacy to support refugees in our area.  Join us in welcoming her in the church parlor.

Sunday, January 13, after the 11:00 a.m. service
The Refugee Committee will serve the first parish lunch in our newly renovated kitchen. In the past year, our committee has helped a number of refugees as they settle into the greater Washington community. They come with minimal belongings, but a deep appreciation of what this country is offering them. With the support from St. John's and other churches and NGOs one such family, Sadiq, his wife, Fuzia, and their four children, have done an impressive job of settling into Northern Virginia.  Fuzia will prepare several special Afghan dishes which our committee will complement with other dishes. Sadiq will speak briefly about his experience as a refugee departing from Afghanistan, getting established in this country and arranging for his family to join him.
