Thank You to the Christmas Flower Guild Team!

St. John's Church thanks  the Christmas Flower Guild team for creating such beautiful arrangements throughout our church.

The Flower Guild watered and bagged 200 mini and pixie poinsettias! Joanne Hutton brought one huge bag of strong magnolia cuttings from a tree that had just been clipped and another bag of boxwood from her neighborhood. We added hurricane lamps with pillar candles to brighten up the stained glass windows in place of large flower arrangements. We set up both the large and the small creche this year, which was delightful. Putting bows on wreaths and hanging them occurred earlier in the week and always takes much longer than one can imagine. And, we thank Garry Dalby for prepping our candles for display.

The team included:
Joanne Hutton and Elizabeth Lewis - Main Altar
Kristin Josey and Julia Koster - Pulpit
Joanne Hutton - Lectern
Thea Crouch - Advent Wreath
Jennifer Urquhardt - Chapel
Pat Dalby - Large Balcony Arrangements - Wreaths -Hurricane Lamps
Katherine  Kyle - Narthex - Wreaths - Hurricane Lamps

Elizabeth Mandelman, the Director of Policy and Advocacy at HIAS has taken ill and will not present at this Sunday's Speaker Series. We hope to reschedule her sometime this spring.

Sunday, January 13, after the 11:00 a.m. service
The Refugee Committee will serve the first parish lunch in our newly renovated kitchen. In the past year, our committee has helped a number of refugees as they settle into the greater Washington community. They come with minimal belongings, but a deep appreciation of what this country is offering them. With the support from St. John's and other churches and NGOs one such family, Sadiq, his wife, Fuzia, and their four children, have done an impressive job of settling into Northern Virginia.  Fuzia will prepare several special Afghan dishes which our committee will complement with other dishes. Sadiq will speak briefly about his experience as a refugee departing from Afghanistan, getting established in this country and arranging for his family to join him.
