Doing 'The Work of Christmas'

A long-time ACCA volunteer suggested we reprint a poem called "The Work of Christmas" by Dr. Howard Thurman. It certainly seems appropriate as we consider the New Year to come and what each of us can to do heal our world.

When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flocks,
The work of Christmas begins .
To find the lost .
To heal the broken .
To feed the hungry .
To release the prisoner .
To rebuild the nations .
To bring peace among the people .
To make music in the heart .
Please consider joining ACCA in doing the work of Christmas throughout the year. You can help in a variety of ways. To donate, please send your contribution to ACCA, 7200 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003 and note "Challenge" on the subject line. You can also donate online via the Catalogue of Philanthropy or PayPal.
ACCA has been doing its healing work in the community for 50 years. Thank you, and have a Blessed Christmas.

Sonrisas and Smiles
And thanks to Sonrisas and Smiles of Springfield for providing dental screenings for the 4 year-olds at the Child Development Center. Just as their name says, they brought many smiles!
Ninth Annual Winter Coat Drive
coat distribution 2016 ACCA volunteers distributed warm winter outerwear to day laborers in December. The clothing was collected by St. Mark's Catholic Church in Vienna, Providence and John Calvin Presbyterian Churches, St. Michael and St. Anthony Catholic Churches and various individuals. The Legal Aid Justice Center in Falls Church helped organize the distribution. Additional items were distributed to residents of the Bailey's Crossroads Community Shelter and to children at the ACCA Child Development Center.

If you have warm winter outerwear to donate, please contact the Di Spirito's at or 703-256-9513. A second distribution is scheduled for January 19.
ACCA Ministries Update - October
The Food Pantry made deliveries to 68 households, including 220 people, in November. Volunteers also prepared and delivered 30 Thanksgiving baskets. The Stuff the Bus food drive to benefit the ACCA Food Pantry will take place on February 11 at the Annandale Giant Food store on Columbia Pike .
The Furniture Program delivered furniture to 25 homes and made pickups of donated furniture from 22 homes. The redevelopment of the former Bloom grocery store into an Aldi grocery store necessitates moving the furniture currently being stored there. The team is working with the Fairfax County Facilities Management office on identifying new storage space.

Family Emergency Assistance provided $21,879 in assistance to 41 households for rent, utilities and medical costs. Among those served was a homeless family of five who needed the first month's rent to move into an apartment. Another recipient was a 19-year-old female with a disability who aged out of her Medicaid coverage and could not afford her medication.

The Shepherd's Center of Annandale Springfield/ACCA Transportation Program provided 48 rides to medical appointments.  In addition, ACCA provided 1 ride to a client who was under 50 years of age and 1 ride to a client whom the SCAS/ACCA program was unable to accommodate.
Meals on Wheels of Annandale served 22 clients with delivery of two meals per day, Monday - Friday.

The ACCA Rebuilding Together program hopes to work on two houses on April 29, 2017. If you know of a homeowner of limited means who would benefit from our help, please contact Patti Klein at Rebuilding Together with the homeowner's contact information. Call 703-528-1999 or email
