When was the last time you talked about the birds and the bees with your design clients? This engaging talk by Melissa Reavis, residential studio director of Hollander Design Landscape Architects, may encourage you to have a new kind of design conversation. Drawing on the firm’s inspiring design portfolio of residential properties around the world, Reavis leaves no doubt about the imperatives and possibilities for designing healthy landscapes that benefit insects, plants, animals and humans. Reavis shows how biodiversity in residential garden settings can be designed within any aesthetic and enhance the overall experience of a landscape and its connection to architecture.

The ICAA is proud to announce the inaugural Gindroz Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing this year. The Award was named to honor the work of Ray Gindroz, FAIA, for his over fifty years of work in Affordable and Mixed-Income housing over his career at Urban Design Associates (UDA). As co-founder of UDA, Ray served as Chairman of Urban Design Associates (UDA) and led countless projects focused on transforming public housing into mixed-income neighborhoods. Ray showed significant interest in the policies, governance structure, and physical design years before it was a major issue.
Eric Osth, AIA is the current Chairman of UDA, a Board Member and Fellow of the ICAA, and the Chair of Gindroz Award Panel, and in August of 2022, he had the opportunity to interview Ray to learn more about his interest and passion in this area of practice.

The ICAA recently hosted Robert A.M. Stern, in conversation with architectural historian Francis Morrone, in an exploration of his newly published autobiography Between Memory and Invention: My Journey in Architecture. Online viewers can now enjoy the fascinating discussion about Stern’s career and the highly anticipated memoir covering his seismic role in the field of architecture from the 1960s to the present.
By turns thoughtful and irreverent, Stern’s candid account highlights the often-overlooked role that an architect’s life plays in shaping the buildings they produce. Replete with personal insights and humor, Between Memory and Invention details Stern’s youthful efforts to redraw house plans in real estate ads, stories about the many mentors who have shaped his thinking, his struggle to launch an architecture practice in the 1970s amid a recession, and his more than half-century of practice as an architect, educator, and historian.

The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) is proud to announce the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara (HACSB) as the inaugural recipient of the Gindroz Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing. This ICAA national award recognizes organizations that have demonstrated excellence in the design and implementation of affordable housing in the classical tradition. The award panel considers the unique challenges of this practice, context, community engagement, social impact, and design in the creation of homes and neighborhoods for all.
HACSB’s mission is to create safe, affordable, and quality housing opportunities for families and individuals while promoting self-sufficiency and neighborhood revitalization. This organization provides beautiful and dignified housing to low-income families, elderly, and disabled persons. Through collaborative processes involving local architects and community input, HACSB has found inspiration in Santa Barbara’s rich architectural vernacular.
On Saturday, October 1st, the ICAA will be hosting an accompanying course, "Case Studies in Classical & Traditional Design: Affordable Housing: The Work of HACSB in Santa Barbara." Learn more and register.
