ARTICLES & VIDEOS: NEW THIS ISSUE
The ICAA is pleased to announce that a new streamlined video section has been added to classicist.org, making our substantial library of videos—including continuing education courses, public programs and lectures, documentaries, miniseries, and much more—available to browse, search, and sort more easily than ever before.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Orville Gordon Browne Foundation, the ICAA has been able to produce a substantial library of video offerings, enabling us to reach students, practitioners, and enthusiasts around the globe.

Now it is easier than ever to browse this continually growing library and to explore video categories including educational films like Calder Loth's "Foundations of Classical Architecture" series, documentary films like the "Design in Mind" and "Classical City Guide" series, public programs and lectures like the McKim Lecture featuring Ben Pentreath or the ICAA's profile of African American architect Julian Abele, and original miniseries like "In Your Neighborhood," "ICAA Influencers," and "ICAA Travel Revisited," among other highlights.

What began as a conversation about the city of Atlanta quickly evolved into a discussion on American urbanism and city planning. In this episode of our mini-series Cities We Live In, hosts Kellen Krause, Rodrigo Bollat Montenegro, and Anthony Catania speak to Paul Knight, an urban and architectural designer at Historical Concepts and the Executive Director at the nonprofit Douglas C. Allen Institute for the Study of Cities. Paul kicks off the discussion by posing the question first asked by professor Doug Allen to his seminar students at Georgia Tech: "How did we arrive here, at the corner of 5th Street and West Peachtree in Atlanta?"

Cities We Live In is a study of what makes our favorite cities stand out, and in doing so conveying a need for a return to traditional design principles which make them so beloved. Not simply a history of urban form, Cities We Live In teaches us why good places matter.

Classicism in Conversation features discussions by architects, urbanists, city planners, designers, and craftspeople about the relevance of the classical tradition in today's modern world. See all episodes of Classicism in Conversation.

The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Paul Gunther, who served as the ICAA president from 2003-2015. During a long career working for civic and cultural institutions in New York, Paul distinguished himself with his tireless dedication and fierce devotion to architecture and the arts. A true believer in the capacity for the beautifully conceived built environment to elevate the lives of many, Paul sought to preserve and improve New York City landmarks, and lent his talents to organizations that include the ICAA, the Gracie Mansion Conservancy, the New York Historical Society, the American Center in Paris, and the New York City Municipal Art Society.

ICAA Board Chairman Russell Windham had this to say about Paul's contributions:

"Paul’s commitment and leadership while at the ICAA made a difference in the organization's trajectory, and fueled the discussion and practice of the principles of traditional architecture across the country. Paul was a delight to work with and always brought great passion and energy to the cause."

After a career spent making films inside beautiful historic houses, legendary director James Ivory allows the cameras to enter his own home for an intimate portrait of his life and career. Ivory speaks candidly about how architecture, particularly traditional architecture, has shaped his films. From the historic Hudson Valley home where many of his films were edited, to the decaying mansions of colonial India that inspired his early work, to the grand English country manors that characterize his most famous films, Ivory takes us on a journey through his career, which is shaped at every turn by the architecture of his surroundings.

Accompanied by illustrative scenes from his films, a private look inside his home, and never-before-seen photos provided by Ivory himself, On Location with James Ivory is the first documentary to chronicle the career of this award-winning filmmaker.

A private visit to James Ivory's historic Hudson Valley home will be a featured destination on the ICAA's tour, Great Country Houses of the Hudson River Valley, which will take place on July 12-15.

BOOKS & PUBLICATIONS: FROM THE ICAA COMMUNITY
This beautifully illustrated volume reveals the deep connection between architect Albert Simons and Charleston, South Carolina, the city that he loved. Although he preferred the more traditional Beaux-Arts and Classical styles, his unique ability to balance them with modernism was deeply embedded in the ethos of Charleston and the renaissance that spurred the city's rebirth as an international destination defined by its architectural heritage.
