Women and Black architects have contributed significantly to architecture in the nineteenth century in all styles from Beaux Arts through Art Deco and International Style. As minorities within the profession of architecture they achieved projects both nationally and internationally with great odds working against them.
From J. Louise Blanchard and Marion Lucy Mahoney to Sophia G. Hayden and Julia Morgan, women have taken second place in noting their achievements and have taken a back seat to the male architects. Black architects, such as Robert Robinson Taylor and Paul Revere Williams, have also made significant achievements in architecture without notoriety. In this recent lecture, Robert Arthur King, FAIA focuses on both Black and female architects who were born in the 19th century and their contributions and achievements in the architectural profession.

Vanderbilt University, founded in 1873 in Nashville, Tennessee, has a rich historic campus comprised of several different architectural styles. When the University decided to comprehensively upgrade their aging student housing, they chose to develop a new residential college system. Based on models at Oxford and Cambridge, residential colleges break down the size of the university community into smaller, more comfortable interdisciplinary student groups that share a home for the duration of their time on campus. As a building type, the residential college incorporates a variety of spaces in which its residents can live, learn, dine, collaborate, and socialize.
Join Steve Knight and Mark Elliott of David M. Schwarz Architects for an in-depth presentation reviewing the overall master plan, exploring the influence of historic precedents, and examining the four new colleges (each in a various state of completion).

In 2022, the ICAA, INTBAU, and the Prince’s Foundation were pleased to continue their collaboration with The Architecture of Place: In Conversation with..., a series of interviews featuring three architects from different backgrounds and points of view: Mohamad Hamouié, Whitley Esteban, and Elsie Owusu.
In this third iteration of the series, Whitley Esteban interviewed Elsie Owusu about her work, background, and design perspective. A student from the University of Edinburgh also made a special appearance and provided guest questions for the interviewee.
As an Architect and Specialist Conservation Architect, interior and urban designer, Elsie Owusu has a wide expertise in transport and infrastructure, as well as the issues facing emerging economies. Passionate about contemporary architecture and city planning, she is particularly fascinated by their relationship to the arts in general, and the specific work of individual artists.
The ICAA would like to thank our Lead Sponsor for Continuing Education courses: Uberto Construction.
