Chatsworth Through Time, produced in partnership with the Duke of Devonshire and the Chatsworth House Trust, explores the history, architecture, landscape, and collections of Chatsworth House. Beginning in the Tudor Period and progressing through five hundred years of history all the way to the 21st century, this series explores the world of Chatsworth, with its own curators, Alice Martin, Head of the Devonshire Collection, and Dr. Alex Hodby, Senior Curator of Programme, as our guides.

Episode One: The Tudor House begins in the sixteenth century with the story of Bess of Hardwick, an extraordinary businesswoman whose marriage to Sir William Cavendish established Chatsworth House, and who later married the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, jailer of Mary, Queen of Scots. Bess’s business acumen and connections to the highest echelons of English nobility secured Chatsworth’s status as a major seat of power.

The ICAA is very grateful to Chadsworth Incorporated and Lisa Fine Textiles for their generous support of this program.

This program was made possible by The Estate of Christopher H. Browne & The Orville Gordon Browne Foundation.

Chatsworth Through Time continues in Episode Two: The Powerhouse, which examines the story of the 1st Earl, who became the 1st Duke of Devonshire, and his extensive renovations of the Chatsworth estate that displayed the great power and wealth of the English Baroque period. The locations and artifacts examined in this segment include the Great Chamber, the stunning frescoes of the Painted Hall, the architectural renovations that established much of the facades still visible at Chatsworth today, as well as a period painting by Siberechts and the grand water feature known as the Cascade.

For years, Irish architectural historian Robert O’Byrne has been traveling around his native country, visiting its country houses and investigating the stories behind them, many presented in his award-winning blog, The Irish Aesthete. After a decade of highlighting the architectural and design legacy of Ireland, the ICAA was pleased to join Robert on the road, to explore some of his favorite historic properties and to learn what makes them so special.

A former Vice-President of the Irish Georgian Society, Robert O’Byrne is one of Ireland’s best-known writers and lecturers specializing in the country’s historic houses and gardens. He is the author of more than a dozen books, among them Luggala: The Story of a Guinness House, Romantic Irish Homes, and, most recently, Left without a Handkerchief. A contributor to Apollo Magazine, The Burlington Magazine and the Irish Arts Review, since 2012 he has written an award-winning blog called The Irish Aesthete chronicling Ireland’s architectural heritage. A book of his photographs – The Irish Aesthete: Ruins of Ireland - was published in March 2019.

Timothy Corrigan, award-winning interior designer and a member of the ICAA Board of Directors, presents a new five-episode series about his eighteenth-century home in the French countryside, Château de la Chevallerie. Starting with the remarkable history of the estate, he reflects on the unique joys and challenges of how he faithfully renovated the house and its gardens, redecorated the interiors while still honoring their historical artisanship, and made the château suitable for life in the twenty-first century.
