New Heights, the ICAA's program for middle school students hosted at schools throughout the country, is now in its tenth year in partnership with Marymount School of New York. The 2025 edition, New Heights X: Memory Manifested, invited eighth-grade students to spend a full week exploring the history and development of New York City’s architecture. Through hands-on activities, walking tours, and urban sketching sessions, students examined how the built environment has evolved, and applied those lessons to a final project: designing a pavilion for Central Park. This year’s program placed special emphasis on the idea that the buildings around us are shaped by a series of decisions made by architects, which ultimately reflect the values, principles, and aspirations of our society as a whole.

“Specimens for the Architectural Lectures” is how Thomas Jefferson described the intent of his use of different versions of the classical orders for his design of the University of Virginia. Not only did his scheme result in a visually striking complex, it formed a unique medium for imparting architectural knowledge to its students. Even 200 years later Jefferson’s “Academical Village” continues to be an effective means for teaching both basics and nuances of the classical language. To this end, Calder Loth’s video lecture offers insights on each of the complex’s orders and relates them to the published sources Jefferson used for reference. Included in the presentation are the ancient structures from which the orders and their details were derived. Also revealed are some of our architect-president’s personal touches to the orders.

At the 24th Annual McKim Lecture, presented on March 12, 2025, the ICAA was honored to welcome Michael Imber, President of Michael G. Imber Architects, as distinguished speaker.
The Art of the Architect celebrates the role that drawing and watercolor painting play in architecture. Architectural drawing as we know it dates from the Renaissance, but with the arrival of computer design programs this ancient art—formed of pen, pencil, and brushstrokes on paper—is sometimes regarded as obsolete. In his lecture Michael Imber demonstrates what a vital contribution the architect can still make at every stage of an architectural project.
Michael’s sketches allow him to visualize his environment more clearly, and they provide an immediate visual language with which he can communicate with his team, craftsmen, and clients resulting in authentic and timeless architecture connecting to the landscape.
