The Writers Place is a 501(c) nonprofit funded by grants and private donations. We're looking forward to one of our biggest yearly fundraisers and celebrations of the written word: The Power of Reading Patron Party on Tuesday, September 11 and The Power of Reading Celebration of Reading literary event co-sponsored by Literacy Kansas City on Thursday, September 13.

  

Tickets for the Power of Reading Patron Party start at $50 and include a wine and book tasting at the home of Patricia Cleary Miller. Dr. Miller is Editor-in-Chief to the Rockhurst Review and Poet-in-Residence. She also teaches Creative Writing and publishes award-winning poetry. Treat yourself and come to meet other Kansas City writers and readers!

 Art Exhibit Extended!

  

Meditation on Place: Photography by Andrea Brookhart and Jesus and Me with Kittycats: The Artwork of Gail Aggen have been extended until Thursday, August 30. The Gallery is open during office hours Monday-Friday from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. The art also may be viewed before and after events at The Writers Place.    

      

Call for Latino Artist-Writers!

  

The Writers Place seeks submissions from Latino artists working in more than one creative medium for a Latino Writers as Artists: Day of the Dead and Spiritually-Centered Celebration exhibition opening with a reception on Saturday, October 13, from 6-9 pm. The exhibition will end on Saturday, December 8.

 

Application should include:

  • Artist statement and vitae and complete contact information.
  • Six (6) to eight (8) examples of your work, which include examples from each medium you wish to display or perform.
Visual entries should be JPG format; musical or voice/performance entries should be on MP3 or send a YouTube link on which examples of your work can be viewed.  You may also send your entries by mail CD* with SASE for returning to: fbradley@writersplace.org or The Writers Place, 3607 Pennsylvania Ave., Kansas City, MO 64111.

Enjoy a weekend-long retreat to get in touch with yourself and your writing in a beautiful, natural setting. Poet Michelle Pond will instruct a workshop on ekphrastic writing, which is writing inspired by art. Co-sponsored by Literacy Kansas City and The Kansas City Public Library.  The fourth annual Power of Reading event features adult learners from Literacy Kansas City sharing their personal stories and how learning to read has transformed their lives. Local writers YAEL T. ABOUHALKAH, LISA HARKRADER, MIGUEL MORALES, and KAY SAUNDERS will also read from their work, discussing the power of books and reading in their lives. NICK HAINES, host and producer of KCPT Channel 19's Kansas City Week in Review, will emcee the event.  Open to the public and free of charge.

Fred Arroyo is the author of the novel The Region of Lost Names (University of Arizona Press, 2008), and Western Avenue and Other Fictions forthcoming from the University of Arizona Press in the spring of 2012 as a part of its Camino del Sol series.  
 
Richard Blanco's acclaimed first book of poetry, City of a Hundred Fires, received the Agnes Starrett Poetry Prize from the University of Pittsburgh Press. His second book, Directions to The Beach of the Dead, won the Beyond Margins Award from the PEN American Center. A third collection, Looking for The Gulf Motel, is forthcoming from the University of Pittsburgh Press in 2012.

Katherine Karlin's short story collection, Send Me Work, published by Triquarterly in October 2011, is the winner of the Balcones Fiction Prize and a finalist for the John Gardner Fiction Award.  Her stories have been anthologized in the Pushcart Prize and New Stories from the South, and have appeared in One Story, ZYZZYVA, North American Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, and many other journals.  She teaches creative writing and literature at Kansas State University.
