Carol Riley |
To all who have wondered why I am visible at the YPL again, I simply missed you all too much. I came out of retirement (again?) and returned to the YPL in May. Lynn and I are n
ow sharing the job of leading the Yarmouth Port Library as co-Librarians and we are joined by a new staff person, Carol Riley, who will work on Thursdays and Fridays. Please welcome her when you see her behind the desk.
With the change in my schedule, I hope to be able to continue to pursue other interests (and grandchildren in Vermont.) I will continue to be in charge of adult services and will be behind the circulation desk for part
of every Tuesday and Wednesday. I'll also continue to lead the book group on the third Thursday of every month. A list of the book group's fall selections can be found on the website and in the Book Group section below.
In other news for adult patrons: please note that every week we post a list of the NY Times best sellers, highlighting the ones we own. About mid-month I also post a list of books that have been ordered for the coming month. These lists are near our display of new books. You can also find a list of media materials (new DVDs and audiobooks, primarily) posted at the end of the DVD stacks. As always, we welcome your suggestions for purchase.
Once a month the YPL hosts Linda Colby, LCSW, Outreach Coordinator for off-site visits from the Yarmouth Senior Center. Save yourself a trip across town when you need help with issues such as medical insurance, tax information, mental health issues and much more. Linda will be at the YPL on the fourth Wednesday of each month, September 28th, October 26th, November 23rd, and December 28th.
Finally, as of Labor Day, September 5, our
hours will change. We will open earlier on Tuesday, and be open from 10-4, as we are on Fridays. On Saturday, we will continue our "summer" hours and be open from 10-12.
Some things you may not know... In addition to passes/coupons for many local attractions, YPL also has passes for for the State Parks. One pass gets everyone in your car in free-think Nickerson or Scussett here on the Cape and lots of other parks around the state.
Now YPL patrons can download magazines! Thanks to the Yarmouth Town Libraries, all residents with a library card issued by any Yarmouth Library can access Zinio, the world's largest newsstand, offering full-color digital magazines for anytime, anywhere reading on desktops, mobile devices and tablets. All you need is your card number to set up an account. Zinio launch instructions are found on our website: www.yarmouthportlibrary.org.

Can you believe it's September already? How come the good weather always goes by so much more quickly than the cold and snow? Oh well, Fall on the Cape is lovely so I will look forward to that.
For those of you who like to think ahead (or are just kids at heart) YPL is now partnering with Edaville Railroad to give all our patrons an extra discount on tickets. When you go online to buy date-specific tickets, you already get a discount but adding promo code YARMOUTHPORT will earn you an extra $2.00 off per ticket!
As Leslie mentioned in her report, Carol Riley has joined our staff. Carol comes to us from the Centerville library. She loves to read and garden and she's the one who owns that cute Mini-Cooper you see parked out back on Thursdays and Fridays. Come in, say hello and welcome her to YPL. We're delighted to have her with us.
A couple of changes are coming in September to Children's Programming:
Themed Story Time with craft and snack will now take place on the second Friday of the month at 11 AM beginning on September 9th. This family story time will be geared towards toddlers but all ages are welcome.
Music and Movement with Denya LeVine will now be happening on the last Friday of each month at 10:30 AM beginning on September 30th. Everyone is invited to join us.
I'm looking forward to seeing you all soon!

| The Yarmouth Library Association's New Faces |
Dinah Wolf
|
A few new faces have appeared at Yarmouth Port Library in recent months.
I write as the new Board President, replacing Ann Petrou, who has held this position twice, each time for several years
. Ann
serv
ed
YPL during some of its most challenging periods-for example, during the 2008 run-up to our "Declaration of Independence."
Carol Riley is another new face at the Circulation Desk, brought in to assist Lynn Lesperance and Leslie Altman; adding Carol to the team has made it possible for Leslie to return to us with the reduced hours she needs.
Unlike the boards of Cape Cod's town-run libraries, YPL's Board is responsible for hiring its own employees, maintaining its building, computers and premises, establishing operating policies, and offering programs and events for the public.
All this is accomplished independently with Library funds and events, membership contributions, and a few hundred dollars from the Town of Yarmouth, even as we continue to offer services to anyone with a CLAMS card; we are both private and public.
2016 marks our 150
th
year of service to the Yarmouth Port community, a milestone we might never have celebrated without the financial support of our loyal patrons.
We thank you all.
I also want to note the recent passing of Charles (Chuck) Bilezikian, former Board member, who along with his wife Doreen was a
liberal
supporter of our Library.
With their very generous assistance in 2009, our bid for independence became a reality when they provided much needed seed money for our Preservation Fund.
A very grateful YPL Board extends its sympathy to the Bilezikian family for their loss.

The Yarmouth Port Library Book Club meets on the third Thursday of the month at 3:00 PM in the Reading Room. Books are chosen by the group and a discussion takes place for about one hour with refreshments. This is a lively group with many varied opinions and reading interests. Join us; newcomers are always welcome.

September Selection:
by Lauren Wolk.
Brilliantly crafted, Wolf Hollow is a haunting tale of America at a crossroads and a time when one girl's resilience and strength help illuminate the darkest corners of our history.
The impact of a lie, the power of friendship, and the need to look beyond someone's outward appearance are explored on the pages of "Wolf Hollow".
Local author Lauren Wolk will attend the meeting.
Ms. Wolk will discuss her work at the meeting.

October Selection
by Richard Russo.
Richard Russo's slyly funny and moving novel Nobody's Fool follows the unexpected operation of grace in a deadbeat town in upstate New York-and in the life of one of its unluckiest citizens, Sully, who has been doing the wrong thing triumphantly for fifty years.
Russo has written a sequel,Everybody's Fool, published in 2016.

November Selection
A Man Called Ove
by Fredrik Backman
Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove is a tale of a curmudgeon-the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell." But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

| Another Successful Plant & Book Sale |
|
Susan Bonnell
|
|
The annual book and plant sale was a wonderful success with receipts of $3,250. The plant sale surpassed last year with $1,006 of the total receipts. The "plant ladies" even went to plant-donors' houses and helped to pot plants! Thank you to all who donated books and volunteered their time and effort.
Once again we also thank the campers from Camp Wingate/Kirkland who helped carry up all those books; South Yarmouth Shaw's for food donations; and the Barnstable County Sheriff's Dept. for the tent loan and set-up. It was a great effort by everyone and certainly shows the commitment of the community to keep the Yarmouth Port Library open for the next 150 years.
Now we start all over again! We will begin accepting books in September. Please check with the library for the exact date. We really appreciate your sorting through your donations to bring us clean, salable books. (Think copyright 2000 - 2016.) We can not accept textbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias or any books with any sign of dirt or mold. Donations of 2016 titles can often be put into circulation at the library which allows us to buy more books for circulation; and 2012 to 2016 books can also be sold on our Book Sale shelf.
If you have a large number of books to donate, please call ahead as we have limited space for donations.

Knitting at the Library |

Dinah Wolff
|
The YPL Knitting Group will resume meeting on Monday, September 19th. We gather on first and third Mondays, September through May from 9:30 to 11am. We invite knitters at all levels, as well as those who do other forms of needlework, to bring their projects and join us in the Library Reading Room. Come to share your patterns and your expertise, or to get some help. Some of us knit for charity, some knit for grandchildren, and some for ourselves.
For more information, email Dinah Wolff or call her at 508-362-7660. |

Hank Teuwen

With this issue of The Yardarm, I will have completed my fifth year publishing the newsletter. I have enjoyed the experience and have made a number of good friends at the library. It has been a rewarding five years but it is time to do other things.
As a result, the library is looking for a new editor. Should you have an interest in taking on the job and, at the same time, making a valuable contribution to the Yarmouth Port Library, please contact me, Hank Teuwen, or leave your name and contact information at the library.
While there may be no chance of winning a Pulitzer Prize, you will be working with a wonderful group of people. You will find them supportive and very appreciative of your efforts. |

FINE BREADS & OTHER DELIGHTS
HAPPY FISH
BAKERY
|
|
Happy Fish Bakery has only been open in Yarmouth Port since September of 2014, but it has quickly become a fixture of life in the village. Owned and operated by Roz, Dan, and Emily Burbank (baker), Happy Fish is open for limited hours, but offers a small and irresistible selection of breads, pastries, and cookies that evoke the bakeries of Paris for many enthusiastic internet reviewers. The bakery also sells coffee, tea, and a few other drinks, and has a pleasant seating area that has become a favorite meeting spot for many friends and neighbors. They also offer a small but unique selection of coffees, teas, California olive oils and vinegars, and spreads.
Best advice - get there early to avoid disappointment, as many items sell out quickly, and be aware that the almond croissants are habit-forming!
