To Our Donors, Volunteers and Board Members  -  Thank You!

Because of you, YPL is a vital member of the community

By Dinah Wolff, President

While January and February are often regarded as a slow time of the year, especially following the busy holiday season, our Library always seems active; volunteers support the Librarians, while its Board members make frequent visits related to their various areas of concern.

As a self-supporting organization, the Library is dependent upon not only the generosity of its donors, but upon its volunteers' willingness to help. With only one full-time and two part-time staff members, it would be impossible to overstate the value of our loyal group of volunteers who fill in at the Circulation Desk, assist in the Work Room, and shelve or pull books in the stacks. Shifts last two hours, and can be tailored to individual schedules. If you're interested in joining us, please talk to one of the Librarians for more information.

The Library Board is a working board, handling all hiring and personnel issues, interior and exterior maintenance, and many of the glitches that inevitably arise with the use of modern technology. As an independent organization, we can no longer rely on Town employees when the power fails, alarms are tripped, a plowing contractor hasn't shown up, or a computer technician is needed. Board members respond to all these concerns, and more.

Everyone volunteering at the Library does so out of a desire to maintain its continuing presence in the north side community. (I can't help but acknowledge Ted Weissberger from our Buildings and Grounds Committee, whose prompt reaction to any plea for help is so appreciated and relied upon; we are grateful for your willing expertise.)

As YPL's President, my thanks go out to all who continue to work in and for the Library, and to those who have so far donated to the 2017 Membership Campaign, an extremely important source of operating funds. Because of you, our Library, founded in 1866, remains a vital presence in Yarmouth Port, still serving its public.

Storytime, Music With Denya
And A Wonderful Donation Of  Books
YPL Is The Place To Be For Young And Old!

By Lynn Lesperance, Librarian

The snowdrops are already blooming beside our mailbox! That means Spring will be here before we know it. While so far it's been a mild winter, with signs of new life and growth, the promise of longer, sunnier days is always welcome.

We have had a fun winter here at YPL and the fun will continue as Spring arrives. For those of you with children up to age 3 (or so), please check out our monthly          Storytime w hich happens at 11 AM on the second Friday of every month through June. We enjoy songs, stories, finger-plays and a craft together. We would love to have you join us.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Education Foundation for Dennis and Yarmouth, we are able to continue our monthly Music With Denya Program. At 10:30 AM on the last Friday of each month, Denya LeVine will be here, letting the good times roll with her special blend of songs, movement, instruments and more. This program is for all ages. We love to see the generations coming together for a good time at the Library.

A big shout-out to Will Rubenstein of Camp Wingate*Kirkland, which is one of our awesome corporate sponsors, for the donation of Good Night board books. We now have a great collection of these nifty little books for our youngest patrons to enjoy. There were enough copies to allow us to share with many of the other libraries here on the Cape, as well as libraries all over the state. Thank you so much to Will and his family for this generous gift.

Don't forget to stop by and say hi.

By Leslie Altman, Librarian

Spring is on its way! Already the days grow longer, so there's more daylight reading time. We have lots to tempt you and hope that you will be frequent visitors.

The Yarmouth Port Library was awarded a grant from the
Mid-Cape Cultural Council for programs on science and nature at the Library, presented by staff at the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary. Our first program on winter birds was received enthusiastically. In February we had a program on turtles . In March Ian Ives will present an adult program on oysters . Three more are on the way during the rest of the year. Stay tuned! And if you have suggestions for programs you would like to see, let us know.

Are you an internet user? Do you buy items from Amazon? Did you know that you are able contribute to the Yarmouth Port Library through

Each time you log on to Amazon in the future, the site will direct you to smile.amazon.com and your purchases will help the YPL. The donation has no effect on your purchase price. Thank you!

Check out our always-improving website.
Not only do you find out what's happening, but we are now highlighting new books that might be of interest. You can also check out the lists for what has been ordered: books, DVDs, audiobooks and more. Nothing makes me happier than to see our new items going out to our own patrons.

The Yarmouth Port Library Book Group
meets at 3 PM on the third Thursday of each month from September to June. A link on our website guides you to the titles we have chosen and gives some information about the books. In March our book is Judas by Amos Oz. In April we are reading Give Me Tomorrow, a memoir about a young girl's experien ces in Eastern Germany during WWII
when the Russians invaded. We are excited that the author, Ingrid Stabins, will join the group for the discussion. In May we will be reading Commonwealth by Ann Patchett.

Book Group for men?
Several men have suggested that they might like to form a second group for men. If you are interested, we can help. Just call or email me at laltman@clamsnet.org and we will see what we can do. No pressure, just another opportunity for the YPL to support the people in our community.

The Yarmouth Port Library Book Club

The Book Club meets the third Thursday of each month at 3 PM in the Library Reading Room. Please join us for lively and interesting discussion. Newcomers always welcome! And refreshments are served.

March:
  Judas
       by Amos Oz

A novel set in 1959 Jerusalem blends a coming-of-age story with a thought-   provoking study of betrayal. A story of error and desire, of unrequited love, and an unresolved religious question.

April:
Give Me Tomorrow
    by local resident Ingrid Stabins

This memoir chronicles the early life and tragedies of a young     German girl during WWII in Pomerania, as the Soviet Union expelled thousands of eastern Europeans from their homelands and reshaped countries' borders as part of an Allied agreement near the end of the war.

May:
Commonwealth by Ann Patchett.

Tells the story of how an unexpected romantic encounter irrevocably changes two families' lives.

One Sunday afternoon in Southern California, Bert Cousins shows up at Franny Keating's christening party uninvited. Before evening falls, he has kissed Franny's mother, Beverly-thus setting in motion the dissolution of their marriages and the joining of two families. Spanning five decades, Commonwealth explores how this chance encounter reverberates through the lives of the four parents and six children.

Membership Campaign Report

We cannot overemphasize the importance of the
Membership Campaign to the overall financial health of the Library

By Les Peat, Chair, Membership Committee

As of January 31st, the Campaign total stood at just over $32,000, well short of the goal of $40,000, and considerably behind where we were at this time last year when, for the first time, we failed to meet or exceed our target.

Some of the reasons for this are not hard to identify. In the past couple of years, an unusually large proportion of our most generous donors have either died, moved away, or experienced changes in their financial circumstances. While we have added new members and others have increased their contributions, they have been outnumbered by those whose giving has, for reasons unknown, decreased.

We cannot overemphasize the importance of the Membership Campaign to the overall financial health of the Library - the proceeds cover about 25% of our annual operating budget. If you have not yet joined, or if you have not yet renewed your membership, or if you could consider an additional gift, now is the time to act.

To those who have already joined or renewed, our sincere thanks for your support.

You may pick up a membership form at the Library or click here for a copy of the form.

A number of businessess sponsor the Yarmouth Port Library and for this we are truly grateful.
Periodically we include a profile of one of them to show our appreciation for their support. In this issue we would like to thank the Frank L. Horgan Insurance Agency.
