A LOOK BACK AT A YEAR OF GROWTH AND PROGRESS | | |
Dear Friend,
With great pride and gratitude, we present our achievements and developments in 2025. It's been a busy year at BINA, providing guidance, advocacy and support to hundreds of families dealing with the difficult and overwhelming aftermath of brain injury, stroke, spinal injury and other neurological and medically complex conditions.
Our dedicated team stands at the side of every family facing myriad challenges and obstacles as they travel a unique journey of rehabilitation. Our work begins immediately after the injury and continues through every stage of recovery, including the long term effects on both the brain injury survivor and every family member.
We constantly strive to upgrade and expand our work to better meet the evolving needs of individuals on the long road to recovery. The programs and services added in the last couple of years, from the growing South Florida office to insurance advocacy to spinal injury referrals, further our goal of reaching every individual in need and ensuring that they are never alone at every stage of recovery.
We value your feedback; please feel free to contact us any time by email or at 718-645-6400 with your questions or comments.
We can't do it alone. Please partner in our work with your generous donation.
With warmest wishes for a happy and healthy year,
Chavie Glustein
Director

Leah * was a healthy, lively 6-year-old when a series of seizures triggered by an infection caused her to lapse into a coma. After regaining consciousness, Leah was left with significant physical and cognitive deficits. BINA guided the family to a top pediatric inpatient rehab facility where Leah started intensive therapy. When she was discharged, BINA recommended an outpatient program where Leah continued making slow but steady progress in her recovery. Eventually, Leah was ready to return to school, but faced many challenges in her adjustment to a classroom setting. BINA’s educational advocate guided Leah's parents to a top neuropsychologist and specialized therapists to evaluate her abilities and needs. The educational advocate worked closely with the parents to understand the report and recommendations and then met with the school and therapy team to develop and implement a comprehensive, individualized educational plan to allow Leah every possible chance for success. With BINA working collaboratively with the parents, therapists and educators, Leah progressed over time from being a passive school attendee to an attentive, active classroom participant. Leah is making great strides in all areas and her parents know that BINA will continue to stand at their side as they look forward to a bright future.
Mr. R. *, an active 83-year-old husband, father and grandfather in generally good health, was hospitalized after suffering a stroke where he was treated until the medical team determined that he was medically stable and cleared for discharge. The family was told that Mr. R. would benefit from rehab, but he was "too old" for an intensive course of therapy at an acute facility and would best be placed in a nursing home setting. After reaching out to BINA, the family was encouraged to request a referral to a short list of acute facilities for their review to determine if he was a candidate. To the surprise of the hospital staff, Mr. R. was accepted to two nationally ranked stroke programs. BINA guided the family to choose a top facility where he was admitted for intensive therapy, an invaluable first step in his recovery. Although every case is unique, and not every patient is a candidate for acute rehab, BINA's staff has developed a keen understanding of admission criteria and expertly educates and guides the family on their rights and options in the rehab admission process.
